Team Putt

Hi all, hope your Christmas was a great one and Santa bought you a 5D mark II, or something almost as good. Hopefully there were no Nikons in the sack this year. I wouldn’t want shares in that company now the 5D mark II is out.
We just had a visit from the one and only Tom “Tommy P” Putt and his wife Rebecca and kids. It was a great afternoon spending time with arguably one of Australia’s sexiest self proclaimed photographers. Tommy P or just P as I like to call him, rocked up like the rockstar he is, in a chauffeur driven limo with all the fruit. I was lucky to have some freshly shucked oysters and a bottle of Grange for him as this is what he must have on a regular basis. We talked about all sorts of things from him to what he was doing and just laughed and laughed. You know what, he probably is the sexiest photographer on the planet, after Peter Eastway and Ken Duncan. oh and mate the hair piece looked perfect. Cheers guys for a fun arvo. The man!

5D Mark II Video clip

Finally Michael has come up with a snippet from the new 5D. As usual looks brilliant. Not long but a good start. Compare this to the quality of his old XH-A1 and it is amazing how much better it is. Check it out. Don’t forget to watch this on Vimeo in Hi Def.

January Workshop

two The date for the next workshop I will be holding at my Dunsborough Gallery is Saturday January the 10th 2009. It is my usual workshop that I held all last year. I cover my workflow from capture to fine art printing. You get a workshop manual, free wine and desert and 18 years of experience. Will short track you to taking better photographs. Cost is $250 and starts at 7.30pm at my gallery. Goes for 4 to 5 hours and is relaxed and fun, well I think it is!!! Check my blog for comments regarding the courses if you are unsure about the value of attending.

This photo is from the 5D again, handheld with the 400mm f/5.6. Two images stitched. Neal knows these Grass trees, they are hard to miss driving down Bussell Hwy on the way to Margaret River. Still think they could look brilliant with the right lens and the right light. Or maybe a moonlight shot with the 5D Mark II and a star trail!!! hmmm…..

Better Photography Magazine

magazine For those of you wanting a magazine full of great tips and tricks, not to mention some mint photographers, check out the summer edition of Better Photography Magazine. Ok when I talked about mint photographers I was referring to myself!!! There are a couple of other dodgy shooters in there too like Tom “Tommy” Putt (the prettiest man in his own lunchbox) and Matt Lauder (who makes Tom Putt look like Elmer Fudd). This is Peter Eastways magazine if you didn’t already know, probably the second greatest photographer to ever walk the planet! Who is the greatest I hear you say? Well work it out people, it isn’t rocket science………………..!!! :-)

Even Horses love the new 5D Mark II

horses I was in Pemberton on Friday and Saturday doing a shoot for Bellarmine Winery which BTW is owned by Michael Schumachers dad. How’s that for a stretch at name dropping!! These two lovely horses decided to pose for me so I clicked away handheld with the 5D and 400mm lens. Out of the car window too, my favourite shooting position!!!! I think they were together if you know what I’m saying. You can easily see which one is the male and which one is the female! Well I think I know!!! Any horse people out there who might know?? Really I have no idea, all I know is I get itchy around these guys!

5D Magic – No more mister Light Guy

tnfp-5d Had to throw the TNFP filter at this one. Got sick of seeing light cheerie pics. This was at 800 iso which seems pretty sweet, 30 sec at f/7.1. Sorry Merv I’ve ventured back to the dark side!!!

956 hits in one day thanks to the 5D Mark II

3200-boats This is another pic from a couple of nights ago. The stats on this pic are:- f/1.6, 0.6 sec, 3200 iso. Image was taken at 9.22pm. Had to run some Noise Ninja over it to make it useable but it responded pretty well. I would like to see how something like this would print, will have to do some tests. 956 hits in one day, I was so hoping it would get to 1000 but that will be something to look forward to over the coming months. All thanks to the interest in the new 5D and you guys for having a look at what it can do. Keep an eye out for more new stuff. Michael is working on some video as I type, he is a bit slower than me to get onto stuff, have to keep asking him, “where’s the footage”. You can imagine what he tells me to do! Can’t post it as little kids like Stakky are tuning in!

More night shots from the 5D

geo-bay-2 This is a stitch, obviously. Again shot at 800 iso. This one is a little more noisey than the other as I under exposed it by a couple of stops. Doh!!! The end result is pretty good and if printed on canvas would be shmick! Forgot to mention this was taken about 9.15pm in the dark with a bit of moonlight.

5d mark II Sunrise

point-piquet Photo from this morning. I was on vapours (battery power light flashing red, watch Top Gun) and kept praying please god give me this last shot, you’d do it for Ken Duncan! Anyway I must be in good with him as I shot away and nothing died!! No lightning bolts aimed my way either!! Stitched photo without the pano head. Nothing amazing about the stats, took it like I normally would with the obsolete 1Ds Mark II. Even the battery on the 5D is mint!!! hehe

Exit Light, Enter Night

surf-cat This is a line from one of my favourite Metallica songs. Obviously they didn’t have a 5D mark II. This show that it doesn’t get dark after the sun goes down, you just need to be able to see in the dark. This camera does. The stats, iso 800, f5, 13 seconds. Little to no noise in the RAW image. Depth of field suffered a little with that aperture but the overall effect is good. Helped along by the moonlight. The white spots are stars. Live view was perfect for focusing on the surf cat. I love this camera!!!

First pic from the 5D

castle-bay1 This was taken at Castle Bay the day the camera arrived. Hard to tell yet if it is any better than the 1Ds mark II on a capture point of view but it must be right??? The benefits are live view on that mega screen and the video capabilities. Should have a short video compilation later this week. Was it worth the money, so far it’s still YES from me!! Four image stitch on the old tripod head! Have to buy a new bracket to attach the camera to the 360 precision.

5d mark II Dream machine

gallery-32002 Just to show you the awesomeness of this new beast of mine I thought I’d post a pic of my gallery. “Big deal I hear you say”! Well what if I told you it was shot as a jpeg?, “so what”. Well how about it was at f1.4,,,, “woopy bloody do”, ok what if I said it was at 3200 iso, “hmm getting better” and to top it all off, handheld at 9pm tonight. Are you interested yet??? Not only that I shot it in sRGB so the colours could have been better. I love this camera, the video we are getting from it is superb and the way you can use it in low light is just brilliant. Still there was some noise present, more than I expected but who cares, the old noise ninja will fix that. Get your orders in folks, Brendan at PRA Imaging will be more than happy to take your money.

5D in my hot little hands

It has arrived and my first impressions were “holly S#$T that is one awesomely average looking camera. Might as well have a 1000D, looks the same. But delving further into it I soon realised this was no toy. The thing that struck me the most was the lcd on the back. I have never seen anything like it. It looks like a tv not the piddly thing I’m used to seeing on the 1Ds. Michael and I went out to do some video tests against his XH -A1. Lets just say it blew it out of the water. So easy to use and fun. The live view, some say is a gimmick I found particularly helpful. You can actually focus with that thing it is so good. The image look to be full of detail but have yet to really look at them closely. Why?………. because Camera raw can’t read the raws from the 5D mark 2. I will need to update to Camera raw 5.2. No problems, unfortunately means I have to upgrade to Photoshop cs4, pricks, more expense. If anyone has a solution to this please let me know. I have to use the Canon raw converter which is completely useless. Stand by for some pics and videos from this baby!

Hot Chocolate

cup-illust Ok its another one of my crappy drawings but I’m posting them so I have a record of my progress in the art side of things. Who knows where it will lead, anyway it’s my blog and I can post what ever I want. I remember getting an email of a GI with a cup in his hand with the title ” How about a nice big cup of shut The F@#& up” It made me laugh and you could probably apply it to this illustration too,,,,, for those who don’t like it! :-)

Fraser Gallop Wine shots

nigel-2 Doing more work for Fraser Gallop. This is a pic of the man himself. I like this portrait, the barrel rooms are always great to photograph in. No doubt I’ll be adding more of Nigel’s amazing wine to our collection. Clive Otto is the wine maker and he really knows his stuff. Just need to get some work for a brewery now and my life will be complete. Check out their website Fraser Gallop Estate some bloody nice photos on it!! Wonder who the amazing photographer was!!!!
