Landscape shot with the Nikon D3s

This was shot with the Nikon D3s and the new AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II
It wasn’t the best sunset but good enough to give this lens a go. The stats are;-

10 shots stitched, 1600 iso, f5.6, 1/200 sec at 78mm focal length.

Pretty happy with the results, will try and print it up this week to check the sharpness. I have shot another 24 image stitch that should throw up some amazing detail will work that up next.

Early Xmas Present from Nikon

I have been lucky enough to be given a D3s and the new 70-200mm f/2.8 to play with over the christmas break by Nikon. I want to thank Julie for sending this gear over and trusting me to look after it. In fact it hasn’t left my side since getting it a couple of days ago. This camera continues to impress me and the lens is superb. The auto focus is brilliant and you just know every shot is going to be pin sharp. I could see this outfit being the ultimate wedding portrait tool, not to mention a cracker for landscapers that are into stitching. I did a landscape yesterday that I will post asap. Yesterday I wanted to get the d3s into the studio for a test under lighting and the results are shown below. Had it on infra red mode to capture this native of Pandora lurking in the back of the studio. Ok, I saw Avatar this week and was almost as blown away by the movie as by this new Nikon outfit. Hell I love em both!

how’s the sharpness of this, and I actually ran a gaussian blur over the image to soften the skin a tad. Pretty cool.

Canon 1D Mark IV in stores

Great news “The Canon 1Dmk4” has landed. Team Digital have one as a demo. So if anyone wants to have a play go check it out.

They have some big plans for the beast over the next month.
Including Michaels trip to Sydney on True North , for him to get some real kick ass video of the fireworks on New Years eve.
And the Portrait shootout happening in the first week of Jan . Team Digital are getting the latest cameras (D3s D700 1Dmk4 5Dmk2 7D ) and shooting them side by side. In a studio environment and outdoors. To get some real world comparisons .They will also do some video comparisons. Those results will be available by the end of Jan. Its going to be great to see where each cameras strengths and weaknesses are.
They also have a commercial shoot coming up with Nikon D3s and Canon 1Dmk4 . There will be some sports comparisons done as well, to really test out the AF.
And then there is the Movie shoot as well that Michael, Benny and I will be doing on the 8th of Jan.

Ben says there is still some hire equipment left if anyone wants to take advantage of the 3 day hire.

Merry xmas troops, lets hope it is a good one and the new year brings lots of other goodies like some new Nikon, Canon and Apple gear hitting the shelves. Come 5 pm today it is beer o’clock.

Nikon D3s Photographs

How good is the Nikon D3s. I love that camera. I would seriously consider it if I didn’t have all my Canon gear. It was fun to use and the freedom you have not needing a tripod allows you to be more creative. This shot was taken at the Perth Museum and I always wanted a shot of a tool. Could have just taken a pic of Tom Putt, he is another tool of epic proportions.

This puppy was shot at 3200 iso, at f/2.8 and 1/50th of a second. Come on Canon show us what you’ve got. Does the 1D mark IV have the legs to stand up against this baby. Time will tell when we get a hold of it next week.

Jet Ranger Confirmed For Australia Day True North Workshop

All those who have booked on True North for the Australia Day function at Rottnest, I can now confirm that we have secured a Jet Ranger from Rotovation and the Pilot will be Dave Adminson. Dave has flown many a sortie for Mark when he was a Skydiving Santa and is a very competant pilot! This is not the chopper BTW, but it is the same sort of thing. They all look the same anyway, don’t they??

The costs are coming in at $190 per person for a 15 minute sortie around the island. We are only going to put 3 photographers in the aircraft at once and the doors will be off, so each photographer will get a total birdseye and unrestricted view of the island.

Of course you will be taking off an landing on the True North and that is an experience in itself!

The day will start with guests joining us at 1030 hrs to 1100 hrs at the latest. True North will then cruise off and the jet Ranger will join us as we leave the heads. On the way over we will conduct a short vessel safety brief followed by a heli safety brief.

Tutorials will start not long after we arrive at Rottnest and the heli flights will also start then so that we can get through the numbers should everyone want to take up the opportunity to have an awesome scenic flight over Rotto.

We will fit lunch in sometime around 1300 hrs, I reckon and then the day will just be more of the same. Rotating between the tutors to hear their words of wisdom, heli excursions, dinghy excursions for those who would like to go ashore and generally enjoying the ambience of True North.

Please either respond to Marks blog, or send him an email at mark@northstarcruises.com.au if you will be taking up the heli option so that I have an idea of numbers. Of course if there is not enough interest in the heli, we will can it and just run things from the vessel, so please let Mark know.

Not far now to Australia Day and some fun times on True North. Stay safe between now and then!!!

5D2 goes for a swim

This is the first snorkeling I have done for ages and a great excuse to get the 5d2 under the water for some tests. I went out with Mark Stothard and Mark Reynolds and true to Markies form it was, “I have found a spot just out here, come on!” The next thing I know we are half a click out into the deep blue sea and I’m a bit of a land lover. I was thinking sharks, big jellyfish and the odd killer blowie might join us at any minute. Markie took this shot of me just before I lost consciousness when my free dive to 3 foot went horribly wrong!
Geez you gotta love that land hey! Flies or no flies, it is just mint!

ISO of Prehistoric Proportions

Well take a look at this pic, it was shot on the run at the Perth Museum yesterday. On the run because my kids were scared out of their little minds when we went to this exhibition that is being held till later in the month. The dinosaurs moved and roared and were very lifelike. I was getting requests to leave then pleading then begging. I had just spent $28 to enter so I didn’t want to go but I also didn’t want the kids to be traumatized too much!! Just a little bit!!

Ok big deal you say, what if I said it was shot at 12800 iso?? Handheld no less whilst being pushed towards the exit and under extreme amounts of pressure to just take the shot daddy!! There is some noise there but noise ninja would eat it up. This is pretty much straight out of the camera too only a slight levels adjustment. The verdict, yep this is one ISO loving camera. I think I have found a new girlfriend, always wanted a mistress, hope the wife doesn’t mind!!

Free Camera Hire over Xmas

The boys at Team Digital have come up with a great deal for the bloggers see below the details from Benny -

Team Digital has the most up to date hire equipment list in WA- Phase One , Nikon, Canon , Elinchrom,
And to keep this up to date we have added two very new pieces of equipment.
Nikon D3s body and the Canon 100mm F2.8 IS
Both great additions to a already comprehensive range of hire equipment.

7 DAYS FREE HIRE

Because Team Digital will be closed over the Xmas break we won’t be able to process hire returns until Monday the 4th January. This means that for the cost of three days hire, customers can have the use of our photographic hire equipment for a further seven days absolutely free of charge. This presents a great opportunity for photographers wanting to capture some special images over the festive season or use the time to become more proficient with different lenses or perhaps studio flash. You will need to book early though as we expect strong interest for photographic hire over the coming two weeks.

Nikon D3s in the Gym, Working out!

This girl happened to be training before the shoot today. The D3s was up to the challenge. She was moving pretty fast hence the leg blur. Pretty good action shot at 3200, probably could have gone to 12800 iso and froze it. It is actually still very usable at that iso. I haven’t had to use noise reduction on this shot at all. Now if that was my 5d2 forget it, at 3200 iso it performs like me doing gymnastics, pretty poorly.

Had my finger on the "Trigger" with the Nikon D3s

This is one of the still pics I have shot today for the movie called Trigger that is being made in Perth. It is being filmed at an old Mental Hospital and it is a very creepy place. More shoots to come including a night session with a cast of 60 people. That is going to be so much fun.

Now for the stats. Shot at 3200 iso, handheld at f/3.2 and a shutter speed of 1/500 sec. Focal length was 45mm on the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8
To say I was blown away was an understatement. This camera is one serious piece of kit and I would have to say I have a brand new respect for Nikon now. So much so that I honestly think I might be batting for the wrong team. The camera is all back to front after being so used to Canons for such a long time, everything seems to go the other way, lens changing, cf card placement etc!

I managed to work my way around the camera very quickly and now feel pretty confident using it. When I zoomed in on my first shot of my son and saw every detail of his skin at 3200 iso with little to no noise I was gob smacked. This lens was pin sharp and I can’t remember ever experiencing the same wow factor with any Canon lens I own, even the primes. There are many great things to say about this camera and that lens and I will gesticulate further with further posts.

A big thanks goes out to Benny at Team Digital for letting me have this baby for a few days. It has made me think about being nice to Nikon guys in the future.
