True North Rotto workshop Extravaganza

Well the Rottnest workshop is over for the year and I think it was a great success. There was a great turnout for the day and the speakers, the crew, the food and Boat were awesome. I had a fantastic time and hope you all gained a bit of information and motivation throughout the day. A big thanks goes to my good bud Markie Stothard for having the vision to believe this could work and for having the perfect platform to hold such an amazing workshop. Nothing like a 50m luxury boat to “Go wild in Style” The day went pretty smoothly and when I left at 10pm the staff were still working cleaning the boat. They work so hard and you should see what they do on a True North cruise. Hopefully a lot of you will soon experience what it is like to travel on this amazing vessel, to some amazing locations and be treated like kings.

Thanks to Tony Hewitt, Nick Rains and Glen Cowins for putting on great talks, my wife said Glen was the best, we are now filing for a divorce!!

Now don’t forget the sponsors, Benny and Trevo from Team Digital and Paulie Paul from Fitzgeralds. These guys have given you some stuff in the show bags to chew over and make sure you support them as they have supported us and the photographic community at large.

Also to Muzz for organising the best video ever, I was blown away and so humbled by the effort he and the others put in to make a awesome video and probably the funniest thing I have seen in years. Thanks to the crew that submitted videos, I think Merv’s accusation might have some truth in it. As for Tommy Putts, that is definitely true, go the pink feather Boa !! Brent your much too kind and the line at the end re Nikon was a beauty! Cheers for that. Tony, you will need more than a wire cage to hide your secrets from me, you are an inspiration. As for the others, Peter Eastway, Ken Duncan and Peter Lik, I’m sure given more time something could have been done to personalize the messages a bit more but being the best in the game we have to agree you probably are too damned busy. Pete, do you know the story of Pinocchio??

Thanks to everyone who came along to share the day with us.

The photo of True North was taken by Jon Davison What a great shot!

The Blog is Moving

Hi all,

My blog is going to be moved into my christianfletcher.com.au site and this process has started. Luckily I have the super team at Clever starfish the best web designers on the planet and Judd Exley of Jex Analytics the SEO superstar looking after me. These guys are the only ones to go to if you need a new website or some refining of the old one. They literally ROCK!

Don’t forget the Boat Trip!!

As if that is going to happen!! Just so you all know where you have to go to get on the boat, here is a map of the street it is on.

True North will depart from North Port Boat Lifters at 1100 hrs.

Guests should plan to arrive in plenty of time say by 1030 hrs.

The address at North Port Boat Lifters is:

Sultan Way North Fremantle: Take the first right past Port Beach on the Coast Rd at Rudderham Drive, turn right into North Mole Drive and then left into Rous Head Rd. Sultan Way and North Port Boat Lifters is the second Road on the right.

Paul from Fitzgeralds has told me he has some great specials on all his printing and mounting services so it will be great to have him on board to add some value.

I also want to thank Mark Stothard and his staff for allowing us to get on what will be the benchmark for photographic workshops in Australia. You all know Markie through his blog but make sure you get to say hello to him on the day as he is probably the most motivated person I have ever met. Let some of that rub off on to you and the world will be your oyster.

The other big thanks goes out to Ben from Team Digital
Ben is a guy who puts serve into service! He is here on this planet only to serve us hungry photographers. I have known Ben for almost 20 years, half my life you could say, and he has been nothing but helpful and generous with his time. Make sure you have a chat with Ben during the cruise and discuss your needs, his knowledge of photography and all its processes is second to none. And do you know what, with all that talent, he is a bloody good bloke too!

Rocky Point, Eagle Bay

Taken a few days ago after I managed to drag myself away from the gallery to get some new landscape images. This scene is a short walk from Eagle Bay and on the right day you get some pretty cool waves there. Still with the recent sightings of a great white and two hammerheads 200 metres off shore it is better to just imagine what the water would be like.

I wonder if the guy on the yacht is happy………………………. probably a big YES!!! Hell the rest of us were working. Even me!! This was a hard shot to take as the flies kept getting in the way. Forget dust spots on the ccd, I was spotting flies!! It was also hot, oh I wish I had a 9 to 5 office job, anyone want to swap???
Hmmm air-conditioning, fluro lights, bosses, bad tea, annoying co-workers, peak hour traffic, thats the life for me.

Eagle Bay This Morning

There wasn’t a lawyer, doctor or sports star in site this morning and I had Eagle Bay to myself. I guess that happens when it’s still only 5am. We had some nice cloud down here today and even a little rain. The old 5D2 isn’t that bad a camera you know, I guess I can live with it for a whilst. I like this image as it is your typical hot humid stormy summer morning. The cloud was better above me and not so interesting on the horizon. Oh well you can’t have everything. More of the “Landscapes” to come.

oh and BTW can you all go and visit Dylans blog again, the poor bugger isn’t feeling the love!

Bunker Bay

I decided to give the emails and blog away yesterday, seemed like a great day for a stroll on the beach, as it turned out it was a brilliant day for a stroll. How lucky I am to have this in my backyard. Hardly anyone around, sunny, blue water, ah it is the life.

Bunker Bay is a perfect beach and those coming on the workshop with Nick Rains and myself will get to experience this in a couple of weeks.

Low Key Nikon D3s

This is another pic from the night on the set of Trigger. The Nikon D3s made it easy handholding everything shot that night apart from the light painting we did. This scene struck me and the rim light on the boy makes for a dark disturbing image. There is a lot of sadness in this image. There was a lot of pressure on this kid on the night with 200 people looking at him perform, not to mention at least 5 cameras pointed at him all night. He couldn’t play the piano at all but they had a stunt kid there to film the proper playing part. Stunt hands I guess you could say. He was pretty amazing too and probably only about 11.

On the Set of "Trigger" with Nikon & the 1D MkIV

On Saturday night Michael the video guy, Tony “Tone” Hewitt world famous art photographer, Benny “Benno” Walton from Team Digital and I were on the set of Trigger at the old Swanbourne Hospital site. You may have seen it in the paper last week. The boys were shooting the piano scene of the movie complete with about 200 extras all dressed up to make it look authentic. It was a long but fun night and we all got some APPA gold.

Between us we had 4 Nikons and 3 Canons to shoot with and just about every lens on the planet. What was interesting was the video comparison between the 5d2, the new 1D mark IV, and the D3s. As expected the Nikon handled the low light hi iso better in video mode but it still wasn’t brilliant. What was really surprising was the similarity of the 5D and the Mark IV in video mode. We couldn’t see any real advantages in iso performance with the 1D Mark IV. Now once again it wasn’t a clinical test and if we were making a cure for cancer no one would believe our results. Still it looked pretty damned convincing. Don’t buy the mark IV thinking it will see in the dark in video mode. Canon if you have any thoughts on this and if there are any work arounds that we may not have known we would love to hear about them. I think the only dumb thing we did all night is not try to shoot some stills with the 1D, that was probably because Michael was hogging it. Michael got some awesome video of the filming so I’m sure that will be on the blog soon. The guys making the movie were pretty happy with the 1D but didn’t want to use it as the footage from it looked better than the 7D and they wanted to keep everything looking the same. The D3s isn’t quiet there yet with video but as a stills beast WOW. Tony, Ben and I spent the whole night hand holding the cameras with some crazy Nikon lenses. My fav by far is the 70-200 and the shot above was taken with it. 3200 iso no less and with the awesome auto focus and VR, it creamed it in.

In between takes we decided to venture into the depths of hell. That is one spooky place, I think Tony had to duck out to change his undies on more than one occasion. I don’t get scared easily but had the forethought to wear a nappy so I didn’t get to miss out on any good light.
We did a pretty rough job of a “Brent Pearson” but it was great fun. Thanks to the boys for flashing the torches around.
Speaking of Torches, I got the best one from Grant Lauterbach at Alberts Car Stereo in Morley. Give him a call as he will get you one cheap. It is an amazing light and most of this scene was lit with it. In fact it is so bright it only needed a second on each part of the wall. Grants number is 9276 5678, let him know I sent you and he will sell you one cheap.

So to sum up the night, don’t go night shooting if your scared of the dark.

OMG Nik software for Skin Softening

with a few clicks of the mouse this software made the skin like porcelain. I have always liked that smooth old world type look in portraits now I know how to get it, and it is so easy.

You can get this gear and a few tips on how to use it from Benny @ Team Digital

I love all the suit and over the coming weeks will be pointing out the best features I have found with it. This was the dynamic skin softener filter that I used. Love it, love it, love it. Even Muzz could look a million bucks with this gear.

Lamington National Park

I’m loving this email posting. Lying in bed, photos on my iPhone, quick and easy, ah it’s the life of a photographer. Took this pic with Markie Stothard and Nickie Rains. How good is that waterfall. Remember the leaches Markie? Hehe having bare feet will attract them. Luckily you had your thongs for part of that 10km hike.

Video Footage from 1D Mark IV

Here is the first snippet of footage from the brand new canon 1D mark IV. Michael didn’t get the best light, we have all experienced that problem before! The footage of the fireworks is exceptional. Looks pretty good in low light, would like to see some stills from this puppy. Will get some on Saturday night at the Trigger movie shoot.
