Update on Nick

Hi guys

After we left had left the Karijini gorges Nick Melidonis was entering Knox Gorge with Cliff Winfield when he had an accident.

Cliff was climbing on rocks below Nick so Nick passed him down his tripod.
While Cliff put it down nearby, the rock Nick was standing on moved, he tripped and went over the head of Cliff and landed face first on rocks metres below.

Cliff summoned help from some nearby backpackers. The rescue took ~ 6 hours and Nick was transferred to ICU at St John of God hospital in Murdoch

Nick has had many titanium plates and screws inserted and can currently only have fluids for food.

I spoke briefly to him this afternoon although he is not meant to speak much due to all the plates and wires in his head and face

He is currently not able to have visitors (but by what he said I think he would appreciate a brief hello/visit from Tony,
I have spoken to Christian – he is not able to visit while away from Perth)

Nick would also like his friends to know what happened – hope this email helps

Cliff arranged for all Nick’s equipment to be returned to Carol in Perth, there may be some photos on Nick’s camera of the rescue

As suggested by Nick I also phoned Cliff Winfield at Bunbury

Breakout at Breakwater

Here is an event not to be missed. My good mate Tony Hewitt is worth the admission price alone, not to mention the other great speakers. Get along and learn, will be a great day. I spoke at the last Breakout and it was a fantastic event, ok, probably because I was there!!     :-0)

Photographer hurt at Karijini

Some people have been asking if it was one of the photographers on the workshop that was hurt at Karijini. It wasn’t but it was award winning photographer Nick Melidonis. I don’t know the full details but it sounded like a nasty fall. Our thoughts are with him and his family. A lot of you might know Nick, his work is superb. Hoping he makes a speedy recovery. Karijini claims a few people every year and if you have been there you will know why. It is so easy to come unstuck, especially carrying the gear into the gorges. Still it is photographic heaven and somewhere not to be missed.

I just spent last night reworking some images. Tell me if you like this version or the previous one!

Weano Sunrise

Weano, Karijini National Park

Wanted to treat this image a little differently. So it was Nik to the rescue. The burnt out areas of Karijini are just fantastic. It is good to stay above the gorges some times.

Took this shot in the company of Matt Inman and Darriene from Newman, two of my closest participants on the workshop. We strolled along just soaking up all this cool stuff. Poor Darriene totalled her lens just before this was taken. On the up side she gets to buy a nice new one!

More From Karijini

Kalamina, Karijini National Park

This is a bright cheerful colourful image of the ground above Kalamina Gorge. We had a great sky but it was too thick on the horizon and our sunset was shut down mostly. Still it is a striking Pilbara scene. Kalamina gorge has lots of great shooting possibilities. There should be quite a few scenes just like this, probably around 15! we were all lined up waiting for something to happen. $ images focus stacked with Helicon. The print will be oh so sharp. You just won’t see it at this size.

Shot with the lovely Phase One, as per usual.
