James Price Point Gas Plant

Did anyone see the 4 Corners story on the proposed gas plant at James Price Point. OMG what a total scam. The government is going to put it through no matter what. It sickens me that power and money hungry individuals can conspire to do what ever they want. If you didn’t see it is can be seen in ivew from the abc website.

Please everyone who follows this blog and takes landscape photos because they care about the environment, stand up to these people because once this is through they will be setting up operation of the coast of Margaret River.

A Call to Arms

I got a call from Ken Duncan the other day. He is organising a rally to be held in Sydney on the 29th of August. See the flyers below. I am heading over for it and want to see how many of you are keen to come over also. This is a big deal for all of us and if we want to keep shooting some of the best places in Australia without restriction it is worth getting behind. I’m planning on spending an extra couple of days and hope to head somewhere for some shooting. So whos coming??

Karlamilyi National Park

More of the sunrise over “Jurrasic Park”. This would be a place to spend a few days. lots to explore and dramatic scenery. My wife told me I screwed the pooch on this shot. I added a cracked paint look to the sky and she said it didn’t work with the rest of the image  because that was relatively straight. Of course I had flattened it by then and I worked bloody long and hard to get this look. Now I have to go back and try and remember what I did! Bummer! Love this scene though. It really struck me when I was standing there waiting for the sun to do its thing.

On top of old Smokey

this is my hippie smoke trail, went for the tie dyed look for this one. Must have been all the incense burning. Actually Dan’s version is better and I just copied his idea, sorry mate! I created the different colours by adding solid colour layers inverting them and blending down with overlay then rubbing back where I wanted the colour using a low opacity brush and blending the colours together. Very pretty!

Phase one, 645DF, P65+, 150mm Phase Lens.

H.R. Giger

If Giger was a photographer this is what he would be into. When this started coming together I was pretty excited. In fact it is almost 11pm and I’m not even tired. I might have nightmares after working on this disturbing image all night. The good thing is my kids will have me up at 5.30am.

I was inspired by Dan and Leigh when making this image.

Shot on that bloody brilliant Phase One! P65 power load!! The 150mm Phase lens captured the action.

Sunshine Coast Workshop with Nick Rains

Nick Rains and I are running another of our two day photographic workshops this time just south of Noosa on the Sunshine Coast. See the flyer below and if your keen to learn how to get professional results and be inspired to take your photography  to a higher level, let Nick know as soon as possible. Our Tasmania workshop filled in a couple of weeks so this one will be even more popular. There are some beautiful places to photograph on the Sunshine coast and we will be doing some shooting to get photos we can work on during the day classes. The location for the workshop is unbelievable and will be a perfect place to relax and learn. Nick and I both will be staying at the Eumarella Shores Resort so it would be the perfect place to be for the workshop and for the social times after the busy day of shooting and post production. We will have a printer with us and will be teaching you everything you need to know about colour management and fine printing. It will be one not to miss. See you there.

Just been over to the Team Digital Blog and I must say there are some pretty cool posts at the moment. Some info on why Eizo monitors are so good, and why I use one, software called Dropbox for syncing your files across your computers and details on how to get you plugins to work with CS5. Also the coolest one, details on the new Gigapan for dslrs. I am hoping to get one to review for the lads and there might even be some extra exciting news from me in the next couple of weeks. Gallows Tow in

Gallows

I had Guillotines in front of me going nuts and Gallows to my right with guys towing in. It looked like lots of fun. Forget the paddling caper this is the way to go. In my youth , when I used to surf I would look at Gallows and think how cool it would be to paddle out the back and surf some of these waves. Of course I never did. That was back before tow in surfing was around. It almost made me wish I was out there. Then the icy wind blew hard again and I thought, “what are you stupid??”

Enjoying the surf stuff, getting a collection of all the breaks along the coast to sell in the gallery. If you want me to get a pic of you surfing I charge like a wounded bull!! haha

Later Dudes!!!

Guillotines Line up

Guillotines

More surf stuff. Thank god I don’t surf as it was only 5 degrees this morning. It was cranking again but smaller than yesterday apparently. There were a few brave souls out and I was pretty brave just standing out in the cold air, need to make a note to self, move to Bali!! Thats Cow Bombie breaking in the background. My mate Adam surfed the Capel Cut yesterday. Must have been big.

There were guys towing into nearby Gallows so those pics will be up next.

Rudall River Sunrise

Karlamilyi National Park

I have decided to head off in another direction to see where it takes me. I am always inspired by paintings done by the masters and have been trying to get that painterly feel for ages. I think this image has its place, possibly not in my gallery for sale but in my own private collection of work that interests me. Maybe they could be one offs, maybe they will get binned after a week. I might wake up tomorrow and wonder what the hell I was thinking. Still it is a path I must take and at the moment the exploration is pretty fun. My wife gave me the thumbs up on this one, I suspect Merv might give me a big NUP.

This was in the Karlamilyi national park and Les and I nicknamed it “Jurassic Park”. If only we had some aboriginals camped under a tree or a swagman to add to the feel of the image. I think the only thing moving around out there was Peter Eastway, if you look real hard you might see him. Talk about where’s Wally?

APPA Award Results

Bright Autumn Leaves

Mt Hotham

Dangar Falls

Thunderstorm, Pilbara

Well I didn’t do as well as last year, no APPA gold for me this year. The judging was pretty harsh and looking at my images now I can see why I didn’t do better. My entries are pretty straight up nice glossy landscapes and to win at APPA you need something more. I am going back to the drawing board and next year will be ready for another shot at Landscape Photographer of the Year. Everyone I know took a bit of a hit from the judges and there were some pretty gutted photographers over the past few days. Oh well, it will make us pull up the socks and try to improve our skills to the next level. So my scores were

Mount Hotham 88, Silver Distinction

Bright Autumn Leaves 85, Silver distinction

Dangar Falls 81, Silver

Thunderstorm Pilbara 80, Silver

Now if you all have a look at Tommy Putts blog he will have his prints up too and his scores, ignore the bit where he mentions that he got a higher scoring print than me, it must have been a glitch in the software responsible for recording the scores. Well done Tommy, great to see you getting amongst the medals and showing you are more than a pink feather boa’d she man.

Also congratulations to Tony Tone Hewitt for becoming a Grand Master, one of only a handful in the world and also a Fellow of the AIPP. Add to that his Gold Distinction for his balloon Aerial shot and the guy is pretty happy. Well deserved too.

I believe Peter Eastway got his head on TV so he is happy, hope he mentioned how the awards wouldn’t be the same without my contribution! And to all the organisers who give up their time to put the awards together a big thank you from us. Now to the judges…………. you wouldn’t know a good photo if it slapped you in the face, hahaha just kidding but thanks for silvers, they are a nicer colour than gold anyway. Gold is for over achievers, I am happy with what I got…….. really…….. ok I hate it, bring on next year!

Three Bears Higher View

Three Bears, Yallingup

This is another view of Bears going crazy, it is good to get an overview of the line up, but to get the full impact you need to be at ground level.

Autumn Colours

Harrietville

I can’t help but think of how much fun we had on the recent trip to the Alpine region of Victoria. Tommy P was in fine form but didn’t get the same vibe for this place Markie and I got. I think he was overawed by our presence and just couldn’t concentrate on the beauty in front of him.

This scene is a revisit from a previous trip i made a few years back. I made the guys stop for a caramel ice cream from this little general store in Harrietville. Can’t remember the name of the ice cream, no it wasn’t a Golden Gay Time, thats what Tom had. All I know is it was very yummy. Again the Phase One came through with the good on this image. Had to stack it to get the DOF but it was worth it.

Oh No!!!!!

Three Bears

That is what goes through your mind just before you cop one of these on the head! If I was out there I would have been sooking for my mummy! Probably why I leave surfing to the wetsuit cladded shark biscuits.

Three Bears Cranking

Three Bears

I have too much to do after being away but I can’t focus. I only want to take photos not work for a living. This morning the sunrise was crazy, noticing the swell was up I decided to get a pic of Three Bears off it’s nut! The Phase One is actually turning out to be a pretty good surf camera. The water detail is so amazing with this machine.
