Well I didn’t do as well as last year, no APPA gold for me this year. The judging was pretty harsh and looking at my images now I can see why I didn’t do better. My entries are pretty straight up nice glossy landscapes and to win at APPA you need something more. I am going back to the drawing board and next year will be ready for another shot at Landscape Photographer of the Year. Everyone I know took a bit of a hit from the judges and there were some pretty gutted photographers over the past few days. Oh well, it will make us pull up the socks and try to improve our skills to the next level. So my scores were
Mount Hotham 88, Silver Distinction
Bright Autumn Leaves 85, Silver distinction
Dangar Falls 81, Silver
Thunderstorm Pilbara 80, Silver
Now if you all have a look at Tommy Putts blog he will have his prints up too and his scores, ignore the bit where he mentions that he got a higher scoring print than me, it must have been a glitch in the software responsible for recording the scores. Well done Tommy, great to see you getting amongst the medals and showing you are more than a pink feather boa’d she man.
Also congratulations to Tony Tone Hewitt for becoming a Grand Master, one of only a handful in the world and also a Fellow of the AIPP. Add to that his Gold Distinction for his balloon Aerial shot and the guy is pretty happy. Well deserved too.
I believe Peter Eastway got his head on TV so he is happy, hope he mentioned how the awards wouldn’t be the same without my contribution! And to all the organisers who give up their time to put the awards together a big thank you from us. Now to the judges…………. you wouldn’t know a good photo if it slapped you in the face, hahaha just kidding but thanks for silvers, they are a nicer colour than gold anyway. Gold is for over achievers, I am happy with what I got…….. really…….. ok I hate it, bring on next year!

well done mate… judges shmudges…… only make us work harder to get better I guess..Congrats again Christian
Congrats on the 4 awards, mate. 4 absolutely killer images.
Great images Christian and well done on the 4 awards. Just watched the video where Peter was on TV, pretty happy he was
(see it on the aipp blog)
Watch out for next year
Christian that’s a fantastic result – not many photographers would have scored 4 awards from their four prints entered – it was very hit and miss this year. Now the fact you didn’t show for ANY of it is a disgrace! How do I get to share the boa with you at the awards party if you’re not there!!!!
Now if I was judging these (unfortunately they came up in another room so I missed out giving them all 55 and ruining Christian’s chances of winning/beating me!), this would be my take:
Bright Autumn Leaves – 95
Mount Hotham – 87
Danger Falls – 80
Pilbara Storm – 83
So I think the judges were on the money however they need their eyes checked for the leaves image – it’s UNNNNNNN – BBBBBBBBBBBEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEABBBBBBBBLE!!!
thanks everyone, oh and thanks to you Tommy, if only you got to judge my pics I would have APPA gold right now and would be happy. Thanks for your scores bud.
Congrats CF. These are excellent landscape images that still look like landscape images. I did go for a squizz on the weekend but didn’t see any of yours on display but there were 65 million people there and only just got back from outback S.A so I was feeling a bit ‘hemmed’ in.
Congratulations – great results Christian especially if you have gained some insight as to how you would improve them in the future – well worth the effort I reckon. If my work was judged by my professional peers to be of that standard I would be cock-a-hoop and off to the shops to reward myself with the latest iGadget (pity you’ve already done that
). Oh yeah, silver matches your hair better than gold so well done on making the awards a fashion statement too – I bet Tommy P never thought about that. Probably out shopping for a new wardrobe right now. You should do the same ready for next year – maybe dye your hair too haha.
I know how you feel i’ve entered comps and lost ….. ah, I mean not won.
Bloody great result I’d say , 4 silver’s 2 of them distinctions, only one step better than that …. GOLD GOLD GOLD.
Well done !!!
If only you had entered that other one you were thinking about putting up, ahh well.
Nothing wrong with those results CF, as Tom says probably did better than a lot of others, Congrats and well done I say.
Thanks everyone, it is a funny thing entering awards, you always want to do well. When you don’t get the scores you hope to it is a bit personal, it feels kind of like you did something wrong or there is something wrong with your choices. You think why don’t people like these more. It is obviously because you get too close to an image and can’t see it’s short comings. Shame the wives can see our short comings!,,
I’m all fired up for next year, I know what to do now and will spend more time thinking about playing the game to win.
Art’s very subjective.
Well done mate!
Well done Christian. Those Autumn leaves should have won just for the sheer clarity and detail.
And the work you put into Dangar Falls, well that should have got gold for that!
Cheers mate
The results speak for themselves mate…you are the man and a legend in your own lifetime!
You have the respect from everyone in the industry and beyond and as they said above…4 images and 4 awards regardless of the Gold or not is a big achievement eh!
Well done with the APPA’s mate – A great result to say the least ! It was very cool seeing images that i was ‘familiar’ with or knew hanging about. I saw all of them hanging with awards except for the leaves one. Which category was that in ?
The Vic trip seemed to have paid off for sure
I also saw countless other fletcher images around the place… there was also another large print of the Pilbara storm scene printed by some mob (can’t recall who) It was a tighter in crop so not sure whose it actually was. That scene is another def. jaw dropper though
4 awards is still fantastic, but bright autumn leaves not a Gold?
That’s just silly. Is the print as good as it looks on screen?
sean the print is awesome, I think it should have got a gold. I guess some days you get lucky and others you just miss out. I only needed one extra point from each judge to get gold. Ah next year!
I just can’t imagine a more perfect shot of Autumn Leaves than that.
Was the score challenged?
I suppose sometimes it’s the luck of who is in the judges box at the time,
and if they happen to like the style/content.
Great images Christian and not too shabby result either! Maybe a few extra dollars enclosed with the entry form would have cleaned their glasses a bit better……nudge nudge, wink wink….. know wot I mean!
Nevertheless, fantastic images and congrats
Congrats, stil very well, extremely well done and those judges dunno a thing. I lurrrve the storm image from the Pilbara’s but then no surprises there.
All nice photos, but i popped over to toms site to see the difference. I think for me the main difference between his 86 print and all of yours is the composition.
But whats wrong with 4 silvers, I bet it makes you try harder next year.
Now does Tony win a samurai sword for being a grand master?
Well done CF, four out of four is a good average, you just have to remember that you need a bit more colour in your box of medals for you to see them all, you needed a few silver amounst all the gold.
Well done.
You should be winning that competition hands down by now! Gorgeous pics and well done but wrong pick.
Nice way to look at it Nigel.
Hazel the Wappas are coming up, might change my tact and go full on photoshopped
I absolutely love Danger Falls, the bokah, light and colors are superb, this image should be in galleries all across the world. I LOVE IT!
