LOL great video! I was waiting for CF to give a polished sales speech….Looks like a sweet piece of gear, do we get to see the final image? Takes the work out of shooting a Panorama!
Heh, good fun, interesting piece of gear although I can only really see it being useful for … gigapans….which I guess is why it’s called gigapan. Gee I’m bright in the morning! I’m smart me!
Question: Does the Gigapan come with face detection so it can detect and tell Christian “YOU’RE IN MY SHOT MATE!” (preferably in a Darth Vader voice)
Seems to take the guys a fair time to setup and get running and it would take quite a while for it to do a 180 or 360 so better be a long long sunset one is capturing.
Merv they are just under $1500 to buy and they also come in Tommy Putt pink!
sorry Flemming no face detection but it does know a pretty face when it sees one! It took time to set up because we didn’t know what we were doing! Actually wasn’t that long, plus Benny was explaining it!
I have on every big stitch overlapped to much and forgot where I was up to. The corporate possibilities for this could be big.
So if you cant afford a phase one get a gigapan and a 5dmkii. Like Flemming said it looks like it takes a while I have had problems with stitches with only nine frames during a sunset/sunrise.
Dan
Can this thing shake a Martini as well ? If not you’re dreaming. If so it’s a bloody bargain, almost as good a bargain as these ergonometric chairs and jousting sticks I am selling.
What a soulless form of photography.
Before you know it, there will be under age mexican sweatshop workers running around the countryside doing the work of landscape photographers while they sit on their Eagle Bay mansion balconies, glass of Dom in hand, cigar in mouth soaking up the profits from sales of their mass produced rubbish shot by poor mexican kids earning a couple of Paso’s a day.

It’s like colour photocopying fine artwork really.
I couldn’t of said it much better Paul it will take the challenge and enthusiasm out of photography but would make a very precise image but at what loss I guess!!!!
I disagree Paul, it’s just another tool to allow you to create an image. I have blown many stitches that didn’t work because I forgot where I was at and ended up with big parts of the image missing. We aren’t going to go backwards to the old film/ digital debate are we. I remember when real Photographers shot stitches by hand! Please! Photography is soulless if you don’t do it for love but do it just to make the bucks. If you can’t see the potential with one of these heads that is fine, they aren’t for everybody but they have a place in the world alongside colour photocopiers! As a photography enthusiast, which I still consider myself, I welcome every advance in technology that will help me get the shots I am looking for.
Andre if I had a beer I would have cracked it, we had time to sit back and enjoy the view. Something you don’t get time to do normally.
I am taking the gigapan away soon to create an image that will be printed 5 meters wide at full res, more about that later.
Love or hate this technology, it is there to inspire not to bag. If it isn’t for you then at least acknowledge the people who worked hard to create a tool that has a very specific job, employing Mexicans.
I don’t see this head as being any different to a standard panoramic head, it just opens up more doors to bigger and better possibilities with more refinement. There so much more to making an image that just the tool like this. Timing, location, composition, correct exposure, creative exposure time, post production… all factors that make each photographer different in their own style.
I think criticising a product like this show a lack of insight to the possibilities of what can be done with a creative mind. Thinking outside of the square these days is what separates you from the rest and this to me looks like a product that would do that.
Paul and Bretts comments sort of sound like what film shooters said about digital cameras as they entered the market.
Agree, like Matt says, it’s just another tool. It is still the photographer that captures and creates an image and not the camera. This is just a tool for creating panoramas, well gigapans and looking at the final image I couldn’t care less which tools were involved, it’s still about art, vision, composition for me, and we use whatever great tools are available to us. You could say a tripod is soulless as well then, bloody no challenge if you cannot hold the camera steady yourself. We use tools to create art, someone made a panohead with an electric computer controlled motor – cool!
Doesn’t mean we can’t joke about it, it still is a pretty funny tool
Guys people have been doing this method of shooting since digital was around. A guy came passed my studio about 7 years ago showing me his pano stitches, with about 40 images making up the final shot. The gigapan just automates it and hopefully produces a better result. Those bagging are generally those who don’t like change, or have spent so many years learning their craft that they hate seeing something new which replaces what they have taken so long to perfect! Everyone is entitled to their opinion, some will like this new toy, other wont, who cares?!!? It suits CF and my shooting so we’d be silly not to get one. Does it take the fun out of shooting??? Not in my mind. It takes the guess-work out. For me, it’s about getting out and about amongst it, not farting around with your equipment to get the shot. Commercial decision well made CF! I hope we can get together soon with our Gigs and they can get acquainted with each other!
I guess everyone has there own point of view I wasn’t bagging it and I guess to keep up in the world industrie it will be a must get one day in the future. I was looking at it and thinking yes it will have its uses for sure but I can’t see to many people carting it to the top of a mountain peak etc but I am happy to eat humble pie that is for sure and I can’t wait to see the image that comes out of it CF thats for sure and I think Paul was talking tounge in cheak having a bit of fun well thats the way I took most of it but its always great to see some friendly banter in the blog room hey.
Anyway get shooting with that Phase of yours on it and show us how the man does it and I am sure we are all going to be well impressed mate.
CF can you use it with the Phase One? or is it too heavy?? would create some monster files! haha I think we can see why you upgraded to 24gig Ram!! : O
Well said Bo and Matt…I can see that operating this machine will need a new set of skills on their own to be able to set it up correctly and foreseeing the mega image in your own mind whilst setting it up and also being able to know how to post process such an image…full on for sure in any mans terms and without such a tool probably not doable if a large mega image is the mission statement.
I doubt that I will be getting one personally, but I look fwd to seeing the results from some of the guns out there after they have gone through the entire process and produced a seriously kick butt image that will have all in the photographic community salivating and the skeptics running and hiding!!!
I am guessing that Gun is non other than the man himself CF…so mate there’s a challenge for you…one kick butt Gigapan please that will blow peoples minds of what can be achieved!
pretty cool thing, hmm will it take the fun out of taking your own panos, i dunno iv never done one really hahah but you would spend 1k easily on buying tripod heads and crap to do manual panos, so do you buy one of these instead?
LOL great video! I was waiting for CF to give a polished sales speech….Looks like a sweet piece of gear, do we get to see the final image? Takes the work out of shooting a Panorama!
Dan you havent seen the image as Fletch’s computer is still putting the files together
This would be awesome to use under the canopy.
What an EPIC video .
Neat bit of gear , could be quite useful in some circumstances.
How much are they and what colours do they come in.
Cool, Christian had the look of “just give me a go” on his face!!! LOL

They look way cool. Bloody handy so you don’t forget a section of the image.
Should have bolted on the Phase One for Mega Gigapan!
Merv they are just under $1500 to buy and they also come in Tommy Putt pink!

Considering the price of most photographic gear $1500 seems more than reasonable for what it can do.
Probably limited use but bloody good when it was needed.
At that price I think 360precision will have some serious competition.
I heard the camera auto-focusing, wouldn’t it be better on Liveview?
So if you cant afford a phase one get a gigapan and a 5dmkii. Like Flemming said it looks like it takes a while I have had problems with stitches with only nine frames during a sunset/sunrise.
Dan
So how many beers did you ended up having between all those takes
?
Certainly looks interesting. Good thing you got all that extra memory on your Mac, you’ll need it!!
Fletch, I’m just disappointed that you didnt crack a beer….looks like hands free photography is the new hands free phone…
…. good until the next tpy comes along!
make that toy – I’m clearly having a shocker
Can this thing shake a Martini as well ? If not you’re dreaming. If so it’s a bloody bargain, almost as good a bargain as these ergonometric chairs and jousting sticks I am selling.
Jousting sticks …… how mush you want for em ????
50 bucks! Just paid for itself!

That sounds like a challenge I can’t refuse Markie, stay tuned.
Yep buy a 360 precision head Mitchell and you can kiss $1500 good bye, I did. Wish I had waited for this baby.
Will I will be strapping the phase to it next week, then I will spend the following week working up one file!!
Your spot on Matt and Flemming.
Put the Phase on it you pussy!
Mine has arrived today. LOOK OUT SAILOR BOY!
also can you still use it manually if the batteries go flat?
Hey Christian
Funny that you just posted the Gigapan video. I went out shooting on Saturday night and one of the guys turned up with a Gigapan.
I can see the niche use for producing Gigapan images, but other than that I think it is a huge monstrosity for the landscape pano shooter.
I just can’t comprehend carrying that to any location that doesn’t have a parking lot next to it.
Not for me… thats for sure.
BP
Tommy you can get lifesized photos of your ego if you stitch COUPLE OF HUNDRED together!! haha
Thats right Will
Now Brent was it Edward Weston who once said “if it was further than 500m from the road it wasn’t photogenic” I second that wholeheartedly……..
Tommy lets get together in Sydney for a gig off!! Mate imagine the madi gras with your giga, you would have pink feather boas everywhere.
