Just returned from a week away with Markie Stothard, David Bettini and Michael. We had a blast and lots of laughs. Not real great light but Lake Ballard is a place with lots of potential given the right circumstances. On the way we stopped of at the super pit to see how large a hole you can actually dig if given big enough Tonka trucks. Hmm I wonder if their operation is eco friendly?? Ah I’d say nup looking at what is going on around the clock. Is a very impressive sight I must say. Getting a good shot of it is a challenge. The lookout has a cage around it that makes it that little bit harder. Those trucks down there are massive, but compared to the pit, they are just little ants!

What I find fascinating about the super pit is the old shaft holes all thru the side of the walls that were put in by the old miners many years ago. they certainly did it hard in those days.
Your gold tooth probably come from that pit .
Its crazy hey Merv those old shafts. Years ago I spent a lot of time up on Station country and the amount of hand dug shafts were amazing. Tough times and even tougher men.
Oh well done CF on poking the Phase through the wire!
Yeah .. you gotta be careful if you go for a little walk during the night when your camped out there.
yeah it is amazing they dug those holes and now they are just taking the whole lot. Huge operation it is.
Just like little tonka toys eh mate. Cheers for a great couple of days away.
Dave
Was great to have you along as always Dave. Lots of laughs.
Cool shot, the Tonka’s put some perspective on the scale of the mine.
What I find most interesting/disturbing about the super pit is, for everyone truck of ore (~60tonnes if I remember rightly) they extract about a golf ball size amount of gold……
That’s a lot of digging and disturbing the environment for such a tiny (but profitable) amount of metal.
As always Tony the environment get forgotten when there is big bucks involved. I am getting more and more disillusioned about what will be left for my kids. Greed rules this world.
better pack up the camera CF, there is gold in it aha. most mined gold is used in electronics as its one of the best conducters around
oh yeh..ps cool shot! seems so toy like…I cant believe they havn’t come up with a simpler way. like conveyer belts of something. it takes a ridiculous amount on time for 1 round trip with the size of that hole
Hey CF, its a totally different site at night aswell, the walls turn a green colour with all the lights at the bottom of the pit, it looks awesome!
I heard it looked good at night mate. Certainly a big impressive hole, and my first worlds were, gee that’s a big hole!
Great image Christian, shows how big these places really are! Looks like a place you really want to keep your eyes on the road, no changing radio stations there!
Yeah tim, crank it a little too hard to the right and your in trouble..
The whole of Kal will eventually fall into the middle of the earth if they keep going!
I think that is already starting to happen. Most of boulder is wrecked from an “earthquake”
I’ve never seen this pit but you’ve managed to evoke a sense of enormity without giving any idea how far this goes in any direction out of the frame – probably a better expression of it than trying to fit the whole thing into one image.
