Well the two openings of the Pilbara Project went off really well with over a thousand people easily attending both events. It started on Thursday night at the Form Gallery in Perth. It felt like we were in the Pilbara it was so hot. It was standing room only and I thank everyone for coming along on the night. Sorry to those who I didn’t get to talk to. It was crazy.
The next morning the five of us were up at 4.30am for our flight to Port Hedland for the second opening. The gallery looked fantastic and the night went well. Right up until Michaels video was to be screened outside in the gallery gardens. We got hit by a massive front and the rain put an end to our plans. We reconvened inside for a viewing on the indoor screen and Michael got a rousing applause from the crowd who just loved the film. I think it struck a cord with every person there as they live in the Pilbara and relate to it. The video will be available for sale soon. Well worth getting a Blue Ray copy.
Thanks again to FORM and everyone who helped put this project together. And thanks mostly to you who attended and made it a special night for all of us.
Remember the exhibition is on for the next couple of months so please go and have a look.
Let me know what you thought of the exhibition, it is a bit different to pretty landscapes as it was based around industry and is more of the ALTERED type that I love so much at the moment.
This is one of the photos that sadly didn’t make it to the exhibition. The curators chose other work over this one. Will have some pics from the night to show soon.

Yes it was a good opening that’s for sure, i couldn’t believe the crowd that was there , someone did the marketing right.
i thought the prints were great and everyone I’m sure would find something there that they would like. You probably have to open your mind up a little, they are not the blue sky white sand kind of landscapes but they they tell a story. ( there are a couple of nups ). I’m going back when I’m in the city next to take it in a little better as it was hard to get up close and personal with a big crowd milling around.
Congrats to the photographers and i recommend it to everyone , check it out at the FORM Gallery in Murray St ,just west of the City Hotel.
Hey Christian , were the same prints on display in Pt Hedland ?
I would love to be able to see the exhibition Christian, but WA is a bit far at the moment. Do you know if there are any plans for the exhibition to travel?
julie
They were mostly the same Merv but a few differences. Thanks for coming along mate.
Julie we might be touring it but that is up to Form. If they don’t we might do a Photographers cut at some galleries in the east.
That sounds like a plan Christian… east coast meaning QLD right! he he
Julie
Yeah kind of!,, hahaha. You have a gallery over there that isn’t wet??
Same Same but Different Eh !!!
Testing, testing, my name isn’t linking.
What are you doing wrong Merv?
… even when you spell it correctly.
I’m a big fan of your aerials CF. I’d love to see a whole gallery full of them – like the Woldendorp exhibition last year at the art gallery.
The opening night was pretty full-on and another visit at a quieter time would definitely be worth doing. It’s interesting how the styles of each photographer started to become clearer in identifying who shot and processed what before having to go right up and check the squiggly signature.
As usual Mike pulled off another awesome video and I’d definitely like to check that out again, and I’d recommend anyone who didn’t get there to have a look when they can – you won’t be disappointed. An ABC journo said on the radio the next morning that it was so beautiful she had a tear in her eye! Congratulations to all those involved.
She was talking about the whole exhibition, not just Mike’s video
. But now I think back, I think I might’ve had a tear in my eye while I was watching Mike’s video. Anyway, check it all out if you can.
I had a tear in my eye cause I was driving, and all that free beer ……..
Yeah the drinks went on all night, they must have gone through liters of the stuff.
Yeah Muzz we all shot the same stuff but it all came out so different, great how that works. Actually the aerial master Richard Waldendorp was there on the night and I was lucky to have a chat with him,
Glad someone had tears in their eyes, and that fact it was a man is even better!
I forgot to mention Mike , Gee I’d like to see that again with less people. If he received an ovation at Pt Hedland then it was certainly deserved, could be the turning point.
Testing … what the f***
it was great to see all you guys again and the exhibition was awesome and was good to see the vision from all 4 photographers and one awesome video guy i hope all the prints sell.
cheers for a great night
philbo
Thanks philbo
Thursday night was almost overwhelming, you guys are rock stars to pull such a crowd. Was packed and at a sound level befitting rock stars! Was great fun to meet so many bloggers.
You guys did extremely well Christian, it was a fantastic display of great creativity and I love the altered scapes. I am going up again though, was quite hard to have a look with your massive amount of groupies
(sorry for doing Jedi mind powers again and making you knock over the champagne…)
Thanks felmbot, your mind powers are very strong with you. Was a fun night hey!
Nothing wrong this end., check your end.
I hate opening nights so I will pop along this week to have a look. Did you get chance to see Nick Brandt’s exhibition in Dalkeith……. stunning.
Congrats on the night to yourself Christian, Tony, Peter and Les … Those prints are something special to see. Always such a learning tool to see really really good photographers and their work printed up in a showcase environment … really makes the difference between the pro’s and us mere mortals easily defined.
I have to say the image on this blog post should of been there on the night in lieu of the shopping trolley …
Looking forward to you guys putting on the next one with your choices I had heard there was talk of
Congratulations Christian the Port Hedland Exhibition is amazing! The opening night was a buzz & it was great to catch up with you all again
I said to Les that even though I have lived here for 14 years I can see the Pilbara with fresh eyes after looking at your works of art – so thank you for that! I found Mike’s movie to be very emotional as he well & truly captured the spirit of the Pilbara. Thanks so much for the opportunity to be a part of it all Christian.
Congrats to everyone concerned ( Christian, Tony, Peter & Les ) and even my mate HACKMAN..
It sounds like the night was a roaring success with everyone totally blown away by what they saw. If Michael’s video was half as good as the little bit I saw on the Aus day trip, its no wonder he got the rousing applause, its thoroughly deserved.
Congrats again everyone, well done ! !
Rod
Great exhibition, Aerials of the salt flats were a favourite.
Congrats to you all
thanks Paul
Great to read it went so well – congratulations to everyone !
thanks Tone!
Hi Christian,
Great night. I brought my wife along – she works for for BHP so I felt less guilty about drinking free beers. In Les’ shots I noticed purples where I wouldn’t expect them – particuarly in aerials of the flats. Were they actually there or is that some kind of Les specific colour science thingo?
Scott
Hi scott
Yes it is Les and the crazy wheel of colour at work. He is the master of colour manipulation, either that or he got the white balance wrong! :-0)
Hey Christian,
I thought the exhibit was great, I’ve never been to an opening night before and felt a little intimidated going on my own but that didn’t last long at all. You guys are all just so welcoming and friendly, I met up with some people from the workshop and lot’s of the guys from the blog and even ended up having a kebab with them after.
I just feel the need too say thanks so much to you all for being the way you are, you are just a great bunch of people and for a newbie like myself to be allowed to step into your world so easily is just awesome.
To top it all off I really enjoyed the exhibit, I spent a few years up North as a teenager and absolutely hated it and couldn’t think of anything worse than shooting red dirt, but I gotta say after seeing all of the guys work it has given me a whole new perspective and I can’t wait to get up there and have a go myself. Great job all around, don’t get too big a head Christian but your pano was my favourite.
Thanks
guys
Andrea
too late Andrea my head is at biblical proportions already! thanks I like my pano too!
This is another worthy image.
WelI done with the exhibition. I was impressed. It is clear from the images you guys are photographers. The compositions and presentation of all the images was brilliant and inspiring
thanks Luke, would love to see you exhibited like that. Your work would stack up easily.
Sounds like it was a night inspiration CF congratulations, I have best get my skinny arse down there and check it out.
go son, see it!
Now I’ll have to find a way to bring our favoutrite rockstars back down to earth!
Good job guys, wish I could have been there.
yes some egos need checking at the door Nick, not mine of course.
Right! I’m going to sell my car, buy a Phase, and head up north! Well done, CF!
do it mate, you wont look back
It sounds like both opening were a smash hit, well done Christian and everyone involved.
