Hey everyone. For those of you who haven’t seen Christian and my Fusion entry in the 2011 APPA’s here it is.
I hope you think it was a worthy winner.
Cheers
Mike TVG
Last night I picked up the Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year award for 2011. Michael got the award with me for Fusion Photographer of the year. His video he put together from our shoot at the Midland Rail yard was brilliant and they played it for the 400 guests at the awards.
I have finally achieved one of my goals and it feels great. More on the night when I get back home later today. I have a lot of catching up to do as well as almost 1000 emails. Sorry most of these might end up deleted! I will have to start again!
Also got my “masters” last night so now you must refer to me as Christian Fletcher “Master Photographer” haha. If you don’t I won’t talk to you!!!! :0)
Thanks to all the judges who gave me good scores and to all the APPA team and Canon for providing for us such an amazing event. You wouldn’t believe the work that goes into it.
Finally to Tony Tone, the MC, you are a legend mate and a great friend. See you back in WA
Oh and that Eastway bloke, your ok I guess!! nah love your work too.
Almost forgot Tom with the pink feather boa! The sexiest man in photography alive!!! Thanks Tommy for being you.
p.s. Nick Rainsy Rains, you da man, thanks for a fun week.
How good is this place, the gates were open so in we went. I was in heaven whilst Nick was not getting it at all. He was soon won over by the power of the altered side and got snapping.
It was SOARING!!
Phase One of course, I believe the Leica found the going tough!
Doing my best Peter Lik impersonation. Sorry I didn’t have the guns out but mine might need some work with the liquify tool. “Look at that power station over there, it’s UNBELIEVABLE”
Nick and I have been trying to come up with our own sayings, can’t use all Likkys. We came up with
“it’s BORING” (crap light)
“it’s SNORING (aka when it is snowing)”
“it’s POURING” (when drinking a nice red)
“it’s MORNING” (when leaning over and hitting the alarm clock)
“it’s YAWNING” (when someone is BORING)
“it’s SPAWNING” (schoolies week on the gold coast)
“it’s PRAWNING” (shooting seafood)
“it’s PAWNING” (selling your crap dslrs to buy a Phase One)
If you can think of any others let me know!
Yes more snow photos. This was after the “Snow Storm”, Steve Pope said I can’t call it a blizzard! The snow had stopped and this image was at the end of the day shot from the hotel grounds in Lithgow. A room with a view you could say! My kind of shooting. Moments after taking this image I was sipping on a nice red with Rainsy, not really a romantic picture I know but at least he really knows photography! I forgive him for being a geek, only because I am too.
Shot with the Phase One 645DF, P65+ and 150mm Phase lens. And yes those dots on the image have to stay, they are kangaroos.
This reminds me of my sheep photo I took a few years back in Balingup. This scene was just perfect. The horse behaved nicely and didn’t move. It has a interesting quality that I like.
I love this shot, sorry to sound so confident but it is just Brilliant!! It looks old and not something that was taken today 21/6/2011.
Another image from this afternoon. It was brilliant to watch the snow fall around us. As a West Australian it was a bit of a novelty. Temp at the top of the hill was 0 degrees with an apparent temp of -6.1.
Nick and I had lots of fun shooting this place. There was a storm heading our way and the clouds were moving overhead so fast. Shot with my B&W ND to slow everything down and add to the drama. There is so much to point a camera at over here. Some of the old buildings and epic scenery are brilliant. We went to a great place called the Lost City today and it was epic.
This is the first shot of the snow we have here in Lithgow. Can’t believe our luck. We are heading off to shoot some more now! Awesome! It’s ROARING!!!!
The mornings of the workshop were clear, but you make the most of what you get! Thats landscape photography for you.
well not in this shot but outside our motel room as I type. amazing! I have only seen snow once before, Nick and I are amping! Can’t wait to get out and shoot some!
This was shot during the workshop we had last weekend.
Nick and I had a great workshop in the Blue Mountains, didn’t get any great light but we had fun all the same. Thanks to everyone that attended you were great company.
Today Nick and I found some cool altered landscapes and some industry. This nice coal fired power station made a good subject! hopefully one day this sort of thing will be considered a dinosaur and we will shake our heads at how stupid we were to have them.
More altered landscapes to come! Hooray you say!
I did an unusual thing today. I took a photo in my backyard. As Neal said it has been a while! The 10 stop ND saved this pic from boring mid day drudgery! I like it
Phase One P65+
Ok just when you thought you were sick of portraits here is another! I must say it is nice to shoot different stuff. I enjoy the altered landscapes too as they challenge you and it all teaches you something about getting better images. I think the more varied your work the great the improvement you will have. Makes sense really.
My subject is an amazing Jazz singer named Sarah Mckenzie. She was onboard the True North performing every evening for the guests. At 23 she has already achieved some fantastic milestones including performing with James Morrison, and Michael Bubble amongst others. You can find out more about her here
If you are looking for some music to go with your latest slideshow or video project contact her for full details of what she has to offer.
Phase One 645DF, P65+ back, Schneider 80mm f/2.8
Another photo of Jen shot in our new studio. Normally this isn’t a very flattering light to photograph a woman but Jen looks fantastic !! It is more a proof of concept for me as I am just getting used to taking studio portraits. The Phase One just kills it in the studio, it is so good you just want to weep! P65+, 645DF, Schneider 80mm f/2.8.
Got some bad news today we are being evicted from our new studio space as someone has taken over the entire premises and that means we go. Looking for an alternative, Typical hey. Have had it for a couple of years and just when I am about to use it I can’t!!
This was shot during the middle of the day. Luckily I had my B&W 10 stop Nd to slow down the action.
There was some pretty cool stuff to shoot in this old place. I loved the hard core industrial look of this shot. All the pipes and steel beams.
