500

Hey all, needs some votes on 500px to get my rankings up. If your bored and have some time to kill. Got to the link and add my pics as favourites. This is a pretty cool site, a bit like Flickr but your images get rated as people click on them so it is a good way to determine if people like the image or not. Might help sales, who knows!

Epic Swell Hits Sugarloaf Rock

A passing storm whipped up a large swell pounding massive waves onto the SouthWest coast.

My brother and I went down to Sugarloaf Rock, an iconic landmark near Cape Naturaliste to check out the swell and where blown away, quite literally, by the awesome waves pounding into the rock.

This footage was shot under extremely trying conditions. The swell was pushing up so much salt spray that even at a couple of hundred meters away we where getting hammered. You had to cover your camera with a plastic bag, set up your shot, take of the bag, and take the shot.

Of course I was shooting video so my camera copped it big time. I was using a Zeiss 50mm f/1,4 supplied by Ben at Team Digital to test out. Must say it’s a great little lens and definitely an alternative to Canons more expensive 50mm f/1,2.

The footage is quite shaky from the wind which was blowing at about 40 knots. On a couple of occassions I was almost blown off my feet. It certainly wasn’t the best conditions to be shooting.

Shot with a 5Dmk2, Zeiss 50mm f/1,4

Sugarloaf Swell

This isn’t the best image I have taken but today at Sugarloaf was pretty epic. The swell was the biggest I have ever seen there. Shooting conditions were appalling with strong winds and the salt spray coated everything. Luckily I had a plastic bag to cover the Phase with and an old polariser for the lens. For those who have been to Sugarloaf Rock, that is just about everyone! you would know how huge it is. The spray was going higher than the rock. It was just brilliant to watch.

Smiths Point Rock Formation

We have been having some fantastic skies down here this week. I thought I would give Smiths Point a try again as I hadn’t been there for years. Some good scenes if you have time to scope them before the light goes crazy!

This one is very painterly, the test print I just did looks mint. Man I love having an Epson 4900 at home. Shot on the new 28mm Phase lens. I’m liking it a lot.

Fog and Trees!

Very moody morning we had yesterday, and I’m not talking about my mental state. Gotta love a tree in a paddock, even though it has been done to death.

I shot my son Charlie

Ok I shot him with a Zeiss 50mm f/1,4 lens as per above which is now being stocked by Ben at Team Digital. I am still mucking around with this lens on my 5D but it feels really good, looks really good and is everything the Canon equivalent is and maybe even better and for half the price. Ask Ben about the other range of exceptional Zeiss lenses on offer.

I’ll post some more footage from the Zeiss soon but in the meantime here is a little clip of my little mate.YouTube Preview Image

OK! OK! Uncle Sam needs me.  I have answered the call and will be winging my way across to the US in October for 17 days. I’m going to be baby sitting Rocking Rod Thomas and Danny Boy Irvine as we criss cross some of the best landscapes the Southwest of the US has. If any one out there has any tips on travelling with these two guys please feel free to make them known to me. I have slept with Rod before but I always insisted that I be on top.

Should be a hoot…..

10 Ways to beat the Carbon Tax

1/ Turn off lights your not using

2/ Turn off all standby power (yes sorry, cant do that with the remote)

3/ Use power when it is the cheapest (put the dishwasher, Dryer or washing machine on just before you go to bed)

4/ Get solar panels on your roof.

5/ Set your aircon at 21 degrees not 30!

6/ wear ugg boots and a jumper and turn the aircon off!

7/ when your 50watt halogen globes blow replace then with 35watts that offer the same brightness (actually I think there are even more efficient ones available now)

8/ don’t fill your kettle to boil one cup of water.

9/ give up smoking and drinking

10/ Don the lycra and ride your bike to work.

If you do that the carbon tax won’t effect you at all. So if I hear anyone whinge about it again, in the paper, on the radio or where ever I am going to scream! The future is in your hands, be smart not lazy! This is what the carbon tax is designed to do, make us all change our habits. It is a great idea. How do you make people change, charge them if they don’t. I’m up for the challenge!

Nice work Woodside!

Goes to show with lots of money and enough greed anything is possible. As Flemming said, how far would he be allowed to go with a bulldozer if he wanted to carve up some wilderness.

I’m not having a go at anyone who works for Woodside just those who make the decisions, and most of all our glorious leader Barnett. You must be so proud right now. Thanks to you our economy is going to prosper, the indigenous will be housed, educated and happy (just like what the mining industry have done for the peoples of the Pilbara) and a whole new industrial scar will cover one of our last wilderness areas! Brilliant.

Right now I could drive a bulldozer right through parliament house, but I wouldn’t. I have too much respect for peoples property and the law!!!!

p.s. I’m not having a go at the police either, they are doing a job like the rest of us.

Police arrest Protestors in the Kimberley

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/9783889/police-break-up-gas-hub-protest/

There goes the Kimberley! Why????  MONEY is the only reason! More destruction of our wilderness by a bunch of greedy individuals. There are alternatives, and yes we can still get the gas and all be rich. Best of all the Kimberley will be spared from this monstrosity.

Woodside chooses Montara oil spill company as joint venture partner for Browse Basin drilling program

As Woodside’s PR campaign to win local confidence over its plans to develop the Browse Basin hits top gear, they may have hit an obstacle in choosing the company responsible for the 2009 Montara oil spill in the Kimberley as their joint venture partner for a proposed drilling program in the Basin. Now that is a good move! Way to go, I wonder who thought that was a good idea?

Bike to Broome

Paul Thesiera is doing a great job of mustering up people to come on the Bike to Broome awareness ride starting on the 21st of August. We are needing more people to join in to either ride or offer support to the riders. I will be riding, hopefully shedding some kilos and would love to see more people who care about the Kimberley. Paul also needs donations of money to help fund the ride so any pledges should be made to him via his website. Let us know if you can be involved, it is going to be fun and the cause is very worthy.

Sydney seen through the lens of the Fuji X100

I spent a few days in Sydney for the APPA awards and had the best time with my little fuji X100. Here are some of the results. The Fuji is so unassuming it is easy to get great shots without raising the hackles of Sydneys notorious security guards! If only they knew the X100 is a potent camera that continues to blow peoples minds!

New F- Stop Guru

What a fitting name for my new bag courtesy of F-Stops man in Australia, Rocking Rod Thomas. The Guru, now I wonder who they were talking about haha. This little baby is going to be brilliant for back country hiking, and we all know how I like to do that! Will let you know how it performs but for the adventure dudes and dudettes out there this would have to be the goods. Mine is black too, matches my hair, ok my grey F-Stop bag matches my hair but I’m only a peroxide bottle away from a blonde coloured bag!!

I’ve said it before, my F-stop bag is the best I have ever owned. This is why all the best serious landscapers out there are using them.

You can buy your bags all over Australia, In Perth it is from Team Digital but contact Rod Thomas to get the other locations where you can get yours.
