Another great video by my brother Michael. Shows off the Gigapan and the fun you can have with it. Now before you guys go, hang on that Sugarloaf shot wasn’t taken with the Gigapan, it is there because the actual image we shot wasn’t that great. Not in quality, that was awesome, in light and feel. It was the wrong time of day. For the video Michael thought this shot looked better, see even with all the best technology in the world if the light isn’t on….
The Cartoon Look
Have you ever wondered how photographers get that cartoon look in some of their portraits. That gritty dirty contrasty look. I have been trying to work it out for ages. I think I am almost there. Am I going to divulge the secret?? Hmm, you might have to get on my next workshop! Well thats if you like this look. If you don’t, and I suspect you won’t Hazel, then you won’t care a bit!!
I like it, it is fun to do and creative.

Phase One – see for yourself
I think photographing with a camera like the Phase One has given me the spark I needed to get back into shooting. I can’t wait for the day to start so I can go out and shoot, or should that be reshoot all my favourite locations. The P65+ is proving to be better than I could have imagined and at last I know what it must have been like to shoot 8″x10″ film. Not every image is a winner and you have to make sure your technique is spot on. I am having to focus stack to get the depth of field I want which is new to me after having so much depth of field with the DSLR’s. Still the extra effort is worth it and it has made me slow down and concentrate on the image.
Anyway you can’t get a very good idea how good this baby is until you give it a go for yourself. Have a word to Benny or Trev at Team Digital if you are serious about getting into this sort of gear. It will blow your mind.
Now have a look at this portrait of a very good looking fellow! Ok so I couldn’t find a model for the TNFP shirt. Hey the camera even has a self timer so you can shoot yourself as many times as your ego can cope with, mine got up to about 50 shots! Have a look at the 100% crop. That is all man, er I mean camera! The detail is astounding and if anyone out there would like a copy of this for their wall let me know, I can overlay a target so it would be awesome as a dart board. This is the ultimate weapon for a photographer, maybe Peter Eastway was right all along……………… nah!!

Guest Blogger Tony Kuyper
Everyone has probably heard about my foray into Luminosity Masks, well I have a treat for all of you. I contacted Tony Kuyper the guy who has the amazing Luminosity Mask Actions you can download from his website. They are brilliant and I use them in just about every image I produce. Say hello to Tony and make sure you get a set of these, they are the secret sauce that will make your images pop. The effects can be subtle or you can go heavier and radically improve an image. Tony says he will have his own blog up soon, that would be one to follow.
LUMINOSITY PAINTING
First I’d like to thank Christian for allowing me to post on his blog. I’ve enjoyed the variety and quality of his photographs for a long time. He has a great eye for composition and incredible skill at transforming RAW images into beautiful photos.
I’m a photographer living and photographing on the Colorado Plateau in the southwestern US. Many of the landscapes in this region are well-known and heavily photographed. I try to find unique compositions in this region with an emphasis on the varied and somewhat abstract character of sandstone.
Most of my images http://www.goodlight.us/ involve using Photoshop to create a distinctive look. While I don’t particularly like the “manipulation” moniker that is associated with intensive Photoshopping, there’s no question that my RAW files can be significantly transformed as they develop. I often use the phrase “follow the light” to describe the process whereby the photographer and the image collaborate to create the final photo. The image tells the photographer what it needs, and the photographer figures out a way to meet this need. I know, this might sound a little odd, but once you get in touch with your subject and photos, they do tend to guide you towards their final form. In the process, a rather personal style can emerge, and that’s the real benefit of learning to touch the light.
Christian has invited me to share some of my processing tips and methods here. The basics are found in the tutorials section of my website http://www.goodlight.us/writing/tutorials.html , but there are always additional strategies and approaches that develop through frequent use. Over time I hope to share some of these with his readers.
Luminosity masks http://www.goodlight.us/writing/luminositymasks/luminositymasks-1.html have been one of my favorite techniques for several years. These masks are an integral part of my processing. They isolate specific tonal ranges in the image for adjustment and then blend the adjustment into the image in a seamless manner.
Luminosity painting http://www.goodlight.us/writing/luminositypainting/luminositypainting-1.html is perhaps the most powerful way of using the luminosity masks. When I hear from people who use the masks, I always urge them to develop their understanding of them to the level of luminosity painting because this leverages the potential of the masks to a much higher level than adjustment layers. Painting allows both multiple brush strokes to intensify the effect of the mask and precise placement on the image to provide perfect control as to which parts of the image are affected.
Luminosity painting involves three steps:
1. Create a Burn/Dodge layer in Photoshop—New layer>fill with 50% gray>change blending mode to Soft Light.
2. Create a selection to target the desired tones, that is, make a luminosity mask.
3. With a paintbrush, paint through this selection onto the Burn/Dodge layer. Paint white to lighten (dodge) the underlying tones and paint black to darken (burn) them.
Of course, there are all kinds of variations within this process that increase your control over how the image is affected—the tones that are selected by the luminosity mask; the shape, size, and hardness of the brush; the opacity of paint applied; and number of brush strokes are some examples.
While there can be many aesthetic reasons for using luminosity painting with an image, my personal goal is usually to use it to bring a certain degree of balance to the overall light and contrast in the scene. This is a very personal decision, and everyone can decide and create their own personal balance of tones using this painting technique. Here’s an example how it was used in a recent image.
This first image shows how the image would look without the luminosity painting.
This second image shows the manner in which the light and contrast were balanced with luminosity painting. Hopefully you can see and appreciate how the painting increased the brightness of some areas and darkened others, while at the same time maintaining overall contrast and slightly improving saturation.
This third image shows the Burn/Dodge layer after luminosity painting on it to create the desired tones in the image.
This painted layer is instructive as it shows several important characteristics of luminosity painting. What should be most obvious is that parts of the image appear to be embossed in gray-scale onto the layer. This is the direct result of painting through luminosity selections/masks which select specific tones to receive paint. Areas darker than 50% gray darken the underlying tones in the image and areas lighter than 50% gray lighten the underlying tones. Applying paint through an active luminosity selection both selects the pixels that receive paint and darkens or lightens these pixels as the paint is applied. Because luminosity selections partially select pixels in proportion to their brightness, paint is also applied proportionally as the brush is stroked across the Burn/Dodge layer. The net result is not only that the tones in the desired parts of the image are changed, but the change is also perfectly blended into the surrounding pixels. The partially selected tones receive the exact amount of paint to make sure each brush stroke merges seamlessly with similar tones. Brush strokes can be applied repeatedly until the desired change is achieved. By choosing the correct mask or combination of masks to paint through, significant control can be exercised with regard to the final brightness and contrast of the painted areas.
This is only brief demo of how luminosity painting works. There are lots of variations to the process and perhaps they can be subjects of future posts. It’s easy to experiment with luminosity masks and luminosity painting to see how they might help your images. I hope you’ll give it a try.
Best of light,
Tony
My thoughts on the Nikon D3x
Well, I have been under the influence of some strange chemical in recent months and one of those is found in the latest DSLRs from Nikon. I have had the pleasure of using both the D3s and the D3x as well as some kick arse Nikon lenses. What did I really think of Nikon???
I started a Nikon man, well I was probably still a boy back then, and once again I have been tempted by the black and gold. To say I was blown away would be pretty close to the mark. Now, I am comparing those two bodies to the 5D2 so it isn’t a real fair comparison. They are both way more expensive. You get what you pay for right? But if I had the money and didn’t care about HD video I would own both. My mate Tony Hewitt has both and all the good lenses and his work glows. Ok you can get a similar result from the 5D2 but it just isn’t as good in my opinion. I found the files from the D3x were pretty stunning. Noise handling wasn’t brilliant but then it wasn’t supposed to be. The D3s on the other hand kills everything else even the new 1D mark IV, which strangely enough not many people are talking about. I guess we are waiting for a 1Ds mark IV with a bigger chip and full 1080p video. But it isn’t all about the bodies, the Nikon lenses are brilliant. I have only used the zooms but man they are good. I would love to have a crack at the 105mm.
So should we all sell up out Canons and go Nikon?? Well if they dropped the prices and bought out a D700s or x then maybe we should. Will Canon try to bring out something to kill any Nikon available, probably. Should we forget the lot and go medium format digital, hang the expense! Definitely.
Anyone care to borrow me $70,000.
I have had a good dose of Nikonite, a strange hallucinogenic compound found in Nikon glass and Nikon bodies. My mind might be fried but I am enjoying the ride.
p.s. the problems with the nikon is some button functionality and no sensor vibration to clean the dust off. The D3x was dirty but still sexy. Canon wins on that front. I hear you can set the Nikon up to operate like a Canon, I’m pretty used to the differences now so it isn’t a problem anymore.
Thanks to the two Julies at Nikon and the crew at Team Digital for getting the gear to me.
Low Key Nikon D3s
This is another pic from the night on the set of Trigger. The Nikon D3s made it easy handholding everything shot that night apart from the light painting we did. This scene struck me and the rim light on the boy makes for a dark disturbing image. There is a lot of sadness in this image. There was a lot of pressure on this kid on the night with 200 people looking at him perform, not to mention at least 5 cameras pointed at him all night. He couldn’t play the piano at all but they had a stunt kid there to film the proper playing part. Stunt hands I guess you could say. He was pretty amazing too and probably only about 11.
On the Set of "Trigger" with Nikon & the 1D MkIV
On Saturday night Michael the video guy, Tony “Tone” Hewitt world famous art photographer, Benny “Benno” Walton from Team Digital and I were on the set of Trigger at the old Swanbourne Hospital site. You may have seen it in the paper last week. The boys were shooting the piano scene of the movie complete with about 200 extras all dressed up to make it look authentic. It was a long but fun night and we all got some APPA gold.

Between us we had 4 Nikons and 3 Canons to shoot with and just about every lens on the planet. What was interesting was the video comparison between the 5d2, the new 1D mark IV, and the D3s. As expected the Nikon handled the low light hi iso better in video mode but it still wasn’t brilliant. What was really surprising was the similarity of the 5D and the Mark IV in video mode. We couldn’t see any real advantages in iso performance with the 1D Mark IV. Now once again it wasn’t a clinical test and if we were making a cure for cancer no one would believe our results. Still it looked pretty damned convincing. Don’t buy the mark IV thinking it will see in the dark in video mode. Canon if you have any thoughts on this and if there are any work arounds that we may not have known we would love to hear about them. I think the only dumb thing we did all night is not try to shoot some stills with the 1D, that was probably because Michael was hogging it. Michael got some awesome video of the filming so I’m sure that will be on the blog soon. The guys making the movie were pretty happy with the 1D but didn’t want to use it as the footage from it looked better than the 7D and they wanted to keep everything looking the same. The D3s isn’t quiet there yet with video but as a stills beast WOW. Tony, Ben and I spent the whole night hand holding the cameras with some crazy Nikon lenses. My fav by far is the 70-200 and the shot above was taken with it. 3200 iso no less and with the awesome auto focus and VR, it creamed it in.
In between takes we decided to venture into the depths of hell. That is one spooky place, I think Tony had to duck out to change his undies on more than one occasion. I don’t get scared easily but had the forethought to wear a nappy so I didn’t get to miss out on any good light.
We did a pretty rough job of a “Brent Pearson” but it was great fun. Thanks to the boys for flashing the torches around.
Speaking of Torches, I got the best one from Grant Lauterbach at Alberts Car Stereo in Morley. Give him a call as he will get you one cheap. It is an amazing light and most of this scene was lit with it. In fact it is so bright it only needed a second on each part of the wall. Grants number is 9276 5678, let him know I sent you and he will sell you one cheap.
So to sum up the night, don’t go night shooting if your scared of the dark.
OMG Nik software for Skin Softening
with a few clicks of the mouse this software made the skin like porcelain. I have always liked that smooth old world type look in portraits now I know how to get it, and it is so easy.
You can get this gear and a few tips on how to use it from Benny @ Team Digital
I love all the suit and over the coming weeks will be pointing out the best features I have found with it. This was the dynamic skin softener filter that I used. Love it, love it, love it. Even Muzz could look a million bucks with this gear.
Green Screen Portraits
Having the D3s as renewed my interest in Portraits. My wife and I are thinking about setting up the studio better and creating striking portraits for anyone who wants to pay some serious dollars, wil need to recoup the Nikon setup fee!!
I shot this in front of a green backdrop then cut the girl out using Fluid Mask 3, a great program if your into this sort of thing. I then dropped it on to one of my landscape images. I saw Ric Syme doing stuff like this and even though it isn’t new, his work really inspired me.
It certainly takes the problem out of finding a good backdrop to use!
Nikon D3s, 700-200mm lens, oh yeah, thats the stuff!!
Nikon D3s the Noise Muncher!!
Ok this is just a rough test and to be truly accurate everything needs to be the same. Still the results almost speak for themselves. The Nikon blows the 5D2 out of the water for iso handling. We all know this but I didn’t think the gap was that great. Both images are cropped from hand held shots taken inside at night under dull mood lighting. If you were a wedding photographer and you only had the 5d2 you would be bawling at that moment. On the other hand if you were a D3s owner you would be banking the cheques. It is unbelievable.
Check how much sharper the Nikon lens is too. Ok my 16-35 has never been that good but the nikon 24-70, and the 70-200 that I have tried are just brilliant. I will have the 1D mark IV soon to try out, early reports from my brother who is using it in Sydney have been underwhelming. He thinks it doesn’t look as sharp as the 5d2 footage add to that the crop sensor and he isn’t loving it. Still time will tell when he gets home in a couple of days and puts it on the mac.
My feeling is Nikon has the edge on Canon at the moment. I think their lenses are better and if a D700x or s comes out with the iso performance of the D3s and the file size of the D3x I will be first in line to get one. Hell I still might just get the D3s and be done with it. I think the times they are a changing!
Early Xmas Present from Nikon
I have been lucky enough to be given a D3s and the new 70-200mm f/2.8 to play with over the christmas break by Nikon. I want to thank Julie for sending this gear over and trusting me to look after it. In fact it hasn’t left my side since getting it a couple of days ago. This camera continues to impress me and the lens is superb. The auto focus is brilliant and you just know every shot is going to be pin sharp. I could see this outfit being the ultimate wedding portrait tool, not to mention a cracker for landscapers that are into stitching. I did a landscape yesterday that I will post asap. Yesterday I wanted to get the d3s into the studio for a test under lighting and the results are shown below. Had it on infra red mode to capture this native of Pandora lurking in the back of the studio. Ok, I saw Avatar this week and was almost as blown away by the movie as by this new Nikon outfit. Hell I love em both!
how’s the sharpness of this, and I actually ran a gaussian blur over the image to soften the skin a tad. Pretty cool.

Winning an itouch would be awesome. Bloody hell hang on this is too good for you lot, sorry it isn’t going to happen forget I mentioned it. That ipod will be mine, all mine yaaa haaa haaa (deep scary laugh)
ISO of Prehistoric Proportions
Well take a look at this pic, it was shot on the run at the Perth Museum yesterday. On the run because my kids were scared out of their little minds when we went to this exhibition that is being held till later in the month. The dinosaurs moved and roared and were very lifelike. I was getting requests to leave then pleading then begging. I had just spent $28 to enter so I didn’t want to go but I also didn’t want the kids to be traumatized too much!! Just a little bit!!
Ok big deal you say, what if I said it was shot at 12800 iso?? Handheld no less whilst being pushed towards the exit and under extreme amounts of pressure to just take the shot daddy!! There is some noise there but noise ninja would eat it up. This is pretty much straight out of the camera too only a slight levels adjustment. The verdict, yep this is one ISO loving camera. I think I have found a new girlfriend, always wanted a mistress, hope the wife doesn’t mind!!
