The Landscape 500

26 Jul 2010 at 12:29pm

Ok time to put you out of your misery, or to just make you more miserable. Today I announce the “Landscape 500”.
The most prestigious landscape photography competition to ever be held in the southern hemisphere.

You are the stars, you have the chance to take home the glory, you are ones who will be talked about for years to come. This competition will reward the best in enthusiast photography in Australia. Yes thats right, it is only open to non professional photographers and the images to be entered can only have been shot in Australia or an Australian territory. No shots of the Himalayas here, this is a competition to show we have the most beautiful country in the world and the best photographers.

The photographs entered must be of a landscape but can include urban, cityscapes or landscapes with people. No portraits or weddings please, Yikes!!

The winners will be judged by some of Australias best photographers, including Peter Eastway, Tom Putt, David Evans and Nick Rains. The prizes are awesome and I will talk more about them and all the competition details in the coming week.

So now start thinking about what you have that might win this competition. Why is it called the “Landscape 500”?, that is the number of entries that are allowed. Most competitions attract thousands of entries, this one is different, it is a limited edition you could say. Each person will be able to upload 3 images per entry but you will be able to enter as many times as you like, each entry of three images comes off the 500 allowable. So do the stats, 500 possible entries, 4 prizes, your chances of taking something away are pretty good.

Let the games begin!

  1. great comp CF, that will get people moving 🙂

  2. thanks Andre, hope you get some pics entered, this being the first comp I have done if it works out I will make it an annual event with bigger and better prizes each year.

  3. Levi says:

Will definitely be entering this one Christian! Interesting idea having the number of entires limited, the quality of entires should be top notch!

  4. Andrew Brown says:

Let the games begin indeed Fletch. Well done on creating something like this.

  5. Very cool news indeed
What’s the definition of “professional photographer” here? As in do I qualify or not or can there be a special category for me 😉 I am not exactly making a full living from selling my work but it is just about my sole income in these nomad days.

  6. thanks Ryan, Levi and Andrew. I’m thinking we should also have an exhibition of the top 20 entries too. Both online and in physical print. Would be a great way to get some exposure for the photographers.

  7. Flemming the old rule was if you make more than $20,000 per year from photography and it is the only thing you do to make money then your a pro. Flemming you would get an exemption from the organiser anyway mate as you are one of the founding members of this community and you managed to do that from the other side of the world. A big effort. You are an honorary Aussie anyway. Anyone that tries to say you can’t enter will be struck from this forum!

  8. Dan Proud says:

Hey CF, great comp! Looks like it should generate some pretty huge interest.

Like Flemming, I’ve got a bad feeling I’m considered a ‘pro’! (even though I don’t feel like one LOL) Photography makes up about 40% of my income, and at the moment that is barely anything! What about a category for try-hard Pros???

Keen to submit some images – but no dramas if I get locked out of this one 🙂

  9. Dan Proud says:

Hey CF – random Question – how do I get my icon thingy to come up in your blog? It used to work…

  10. Let the games begin people!

I spose I am not allowed to enter eh…doh!

  11. I like the rubber Flem but only if it is burning.

Sorry Markie you are strictly not allowed to enter, you will be on the boat trip anyway, you have your own printer, stitch like hell with your regular tripod and you can spend the day with me anytime!

  12. He he…very funny mate!

Just teasing in any case…should be a cool comp and I look fwd to seeing the high quality images from all the bloggers out there…good luck team!

  13. Tim Wrate says:

Great work CF – I’ll be entering for sure! now I just got to decide which ones to enter!

bloody awesome way to promote local non-professional Aussie landscape photographers (or try-hards as I think of us!) – so thanks!

    let the games begin

  14. Ian.I says:

im down for it mate. when i get a chance ill look through the details of entry and submit if its not to late.

  15. Rod Thomas says:

Im in mate…… I got an image in mind that I think will work…….

  19. Justine Amps says:

Just what I need before I leave for Karijini! something to push me that bit further to get the best pics I can 😀 can’t wait.

  20. Stakky says:

So it’s a time attack type competition, where only the first 500 entries are accepted? sounds kickass!! i’m down for this one. Like the prize list!

  21. muzz says:

Sounds awesome – makes me wish I was a photographer!!! I might have to wait for the NAPAs – I’ll have a real good chance with those 🙂

  22. Donelle says:

Hmmmm if only I had something worthy of winning!! 🙁

  23. matt saul says:

cool comp! dont think i have anything worthy of a prize, but lets see what i can dig up and hopefully sneak one into the top 20!

  24. matt saul says:

maybe ill enter 500 images in lots of 3,,all can be absolute garbage and ill take all 4 prizes…hehehe

  25. Get a camera Muzz and I will personally coach you for a day to give you a chance!

    • muzz says:

Mark, thanks for the offer but we missed the summer solstice in Reykjavik and unless we can go to the North Pole and get the rest of the 6 months daylight it has then I reckon a day isn’t going to be enough for anyone to polish my skills up. Also, I know you like living on the edge but I should warn you that when I get too close to the edge, it tends to tip over alarmingly 😉

  26. Brett Morgan says:

Something original and mind blowing will win for sure now just to try and get it before anyone else doe’s is going to be the hard part for sure ;).

  27. Hey Christian,

Looks like a great competition, I’ll be putting it up on my blog to promote it too… wish I could enter, but having gone full time last year with weddings and portraits, I’ve managed to exclude myself 🙂

I’d love to do a trip with you guys on True North one day!

  28. Dylan Fox says:

sounds awesome mate! im a littler concerned that i may be on a plane when you open it for entries as i leave from the states tomorrow and get back thursday arvo your time….. I have my three picked out but guess I will have to wait and see if i can even enter :S

  29. jonathan says:

    Great! Looking forward to it!

  30. Bernie Zajac says:

Sounds intriguing – I might give this a shot 🙂 The question is, how and when can we submit entries? 🙂

  31. Great comp, hope the end date is after I get back from my epic trip across the Great Central Road, Alice,Muir Hwy, Roma,Birdsville track, OOdnadatta then back home Whew !!! Back beginning October with the best shots Ha ha…. Count me in

  32. Thanks for the interest everyone, more details to come.

  33. Briony says:

Sounds like a great comp, I’ve got a few shots in mind and I can’t wait to enter. Thanks for giving us enthusiasts an opportunity 🙂

  34. hazel says:

Four male landscape photographer’s and not one woman on the panel. Ummmm given me an idea.

  35. Hazel don’t do it, I believe sex changes really hurt!! Well thats what Tommy told me!

  36. Muzz, I am up to the challenge if you are!

If you get a camera we will see what we can do. I won’t touch the camera or the computer…you will do the lot.

    So, up to you mate!

    • muzz says:

Cheers Mark – you really do have no fear 🙂 My only concern is that it might give me an unfair advantage and disqualify me from entering!

  37. Kheng Teo says:

The competition sounds awesome CF, where do I sign up 🙂 Can’t wait!!!

  38. Nigel Sparg says:

what about me? Im an aussie but in South Africa? can I get a landscape of Australia from where I am? On a good day I can see the coast line of Australia…..! some evenings too ! if i have enough red wine.

Mind you if I went through some of my old wedding shots in Perth, I could photoshop out the bride and I would have a great landscape. ;O)

    Nice comp though.

  39. Denis says:

Great idea; good luck with it.
The recent iconPHOTO comp (which you kindly placed on your site), attracted some really brilliant images from amateur photographers; judging was completed last week.

  40. Dan Scott says:

This sounds awesome mate, looking forward to it. There is some bloody difficult competition around these parts though, might have to make another trip out somewhere good and see if I can compete.

  41. I’m so excited for this 🙂 I’ll finally be able to show you my photos and hopefully get judged on them 🙂

  45. David Sobik says:

  46. Donelle says:

  47. Andrea Green says:

I’m just wondering how to enter this competition. I have clicked on the link above but there is nowhere else to go after that. Is it not actually open yet to lodge your entry.

    • Hi Andrea

Yes it will open on Monday or Tuesday. There will be a dedicated website for it where you will be able to upload your photos and make payment. It is going to be great to see how it goes. With only 500 entries available it gives everyone a better chance of winning.
