The Eve of PODAS

29 Nov 2011 at 7:39pm

Well PODAS starts tomorrow. I flew into Queenstown across the mountains covered with snow and thought to myself, this is going to be one amazing trip. I met all the Phase One crew and took a look at the cameras everyone will be getting. They approximate we have almost $2 million worth of camera gear with us. We had dinner and took a few shots from the balcony of our house we are in tonight. To say the views are out of this world would be an understatement. Boring sky tonight but we are getting some weather on Friday and Saturday. Looking for some drama.

This shot was taken from our deck overlooking Queenstown. Notice how much detail you can extract from a RAW IQ180 file. The before shot is almost black in areas, should I say “All Black” whilst in NZ. Kevin Raber showed me an amazing tip for getting detail out of the shadows in a RAW file using Capture One. I will be using it in the future now, thanks Kevin.

The RAW shot

The Worked Shot

OK it isn’t the best image but how’s our view hey and how good is the detail in the file that we couldn’t see. Excuse the subtle halos around parts of the image, it is almost 1 in the morning here and I should be trying to sleep.

Jen in the Stirlings

26 Nov 2011 at 9:55pm

Jen on her birthday, doing what she loves the most. We had such a great time. The Stirling Ranges are just spectacular and the scenery is as good as anything I have seen anywhere.

What a week!

26 Nov 2011 at 9:15pm

Sorry for the lack of posts, life has been a little busy at the moment. Just got back from a South West Light trip with Peter Eastway, Tony Hewitt, Les Walkling, Nick Rains and my brother Michael. It was unbelievable. Just before that I took this photo with my wife on a climb up to Bluff Knoll. We camped at the top overnight and then walked down in the morning. On the way up the light and drama was spectacular. This image above is straight out of the camera. We had rain showers and gods rays all over the place.

Then with the boys we went from Bremmer Bay through the Stirlings to Katanning. We took a plane and pilot with us to do aerials all the way. The stuff we got was mind blowing. Will reveal a little soon but most of the best stuff will be kept for the exhibition that should be happening around June.

I’m off to NZ on Monday morning then fly straight to Tasmania. Will be instructing at a PODAS workshop (Phase One Digital Artist Series) for Phase One with Ken Duncan, Jackie Rankin and Mike Langford. It is going to be brilliant. Then in Tasmania I will be joining Nick Rains to do our Freycinet Workshop.

When I get home I am moving house with my family and then it is Christmas. Full on. The madness starts again in January with more workshops, then again in February, March and April. May we will be in Africa. Getting tired just thinking about it.

Hope you like this shot of the Stirlings. I have decided that great landscape photos need drama. If the weather looks foul, then you should probably be out shooting.

Speak soon.

Images of Arnhem Land

20 Nov 2011 at 3:58pm

Just in case you where all wondering what I have been up to in Video Land, here is a snippet of a project I’m currently working on with three guys who are passionate about their fishing and all the stunning area’s  in East Arnhem Land.

There’s no fish being caught in this production. I’m saving up all that for the pilot episode. Also this is only a small fraction of whats on offer up this way.

Your just going to have to wait for the 13 part episode to see any more.

Wacom Fest!!!

16 Nov 2011 at 9:18am

Well all my favourite Wacom products are now in at Team Digital. If you are into any serious editing you need a Wacom Tablet, don’t try to kid yourself you can do it with a mouse.

I am getting one of the new Cintiq 24HD screens from Wacom to trial over the Christmas break. I think it is going to add a whole new level of precision to my editing and illustrations. Can’t wait to see what it can do. Ben has profiled it so that is possible to do but I will have my Eizo monitor next to it anyway for the best colour management. Will let you know my thoughts once I have the beast at home.

Don’t forget the Bamboo Stylus too. I got mine a couple of weeks back and the precision with drawing on the ipad is something you have to try for yourself. It adds a whole new level of fun with drawing. I chose the pink pen just in case Tommy Putt was interested in one!

Lastly how about this new Inkling device. You draw on a bit of paper with the device clipped to the top and it records your bush strokes as a vector graphic which you can then upload to photoshop or illustrator and edit even more. So for those who really need the pen on paper feel this is the ultimate.

All I can say is, thank you WACOM, you are WAYCOOL.

Ask Benny at Team Digital for a play with some of this gear before I buy it all.

Feeling Hungry?

6 Nov 2011 at 9:06pm

When your kids go to school you get asked to do lots of love jobs. I don’t mind as parents helping out in schools builds community spirt. Jen, my wife, does so much and I’m really proud of her, she has even taught the kids basic yoga. I was asked to shoot the latest meals being offered at the canteen. Luckily I had the studio lights set up so it was a snap. Even got to eat some the next day! Yummy!

James Price Point Exhibition in Broome

31 Oct 2011 at 9:00am

Good news

The exhibition went well being attended by over 400 people. I believe around $10,000 was raised to help Environs Kimberley with their work to bring awareness to the plight of the Kimberley. It is a bit of a David and Goliath struggle but at least there are people willing to stand up for what they believe.

These are going into a joint exhibition with other photographers from around Australia with a guest slot for our favourite Dane Flemming Bo Jensen. The photographs will be for sale with all the money going to help save James Price Point. The fight isn’t over yet.

True North Kimberley Workshop 2012

26 Oct 2011 at 1:11pm

Ok you have thought about it, you have been tempted by it, some of the bloggers have done it and now it is your turn to experience the ultimate Kimberley photographic workshop.

I will be on True North with the man himself truenorthmark.com to teach everything I know about photography. To show you how to get stunning landscape images of what is probably Australia’s most untouched paradise. See below for the trip details.

Kimberley Gorges From 07 April 2012 To 14 April 2012
Wyndham – Hunter River/Broome, 7 Nights

The Kimberley Gorges itinerary features the northern half of the Kimberley
Ultimate cruise. Here the landscape is dominated by the Kimberley’s
stunning gorge country including the Berkeley River, the King George Falls
and the Mitchell River. Includes helicopter/aircraft transfer to Broome.

Kimberley Islands From 14 April 2012 To 20 April 2012
Broome/Hunter River – Broome, 6 Nights

The Kimberley Islands itinerary features the southern half of the Kimberley
Ultimate cruise. A totally different Kimberley experience featuring the
mighty Prince Regent, intriguing Montgomery Reef and the exhilarating
Horizontal Waterfalls. Includes helicopter/aircraft transfer from Broome.

I will be on both legs of the journey. Join us for one trip or both if you really want to see this coastline. It is a once in a lifetime adventure. Going with Mark is a bonus too as he knows all the spots to get the best shots, he always commandeers a tender boat and we never miss out on the action.

The best part of the True North is the absolute luxury you are in the whole time you are aboard. Not once do you have to lift a finger, everything is provided. It is simply the best ever experience I have had and will ever have. So much so that normal life after True North is a real let down. Be prepared for post True North Blues! Still there won’t be time for getting depressed you will have thousands of images to process when home again and back to reality.

We will shoot every day and process by night. I will be showing all my photoshop tricks and there will be lots of time in the field learning about composition and capture.

Get on board, this trip being at the end of the wet should prove to be as awesome as the most recent that Markie, Flemming, David Bettini and Greg Munyard were on this year. Lots of water and amazing skys.

More details of the adventure soon. Time to start planing.
