Day one of our trip to Port Hedland and Form had organised a heli flight over town and the surrounding area. Of course there were only three seats going so it was decided that only the best photographers would get a flight. Luckily Tony pulled out so I got to join Les and Pete for a burn around in an old Jet Ranger. All the doors were off so we had a great view. It was Les’s first flight in a chopper and when he managed to get his hands unstuck from the sides of the fuselage he pinged off a few shots. Pete was blasting away on the Phase One but with vibrations and wind it isn’t as easy as I had it with the Nikon D3x. Ok as Pete likes to tell me, “they look great as an 8″x10”, I told him who wants all that resolution and who has a wall big enough to hang a pic from a medium format camera. Then he bangs on about capturing in 16 bit and I just switch off, who needs it??? I hate it when he does that, I’m not listening lalalala lalala…….

How good is the Nikon D3s. I love that camera. I would seriously consider it if I didn’t have all my Canon gear. It was fun to use and the freedom you have not needing a tripod allows you to be more creative. This shot was taken at the Perth Museum and I always wanted a shot of a tool. Could have just taken a pic of Tom Putt, he is another tool of epic proportions.
This puppy was shot at 3200 iso, at f/2.8 and 1/50th of a second. Come on Canon show us what you’ve got. Does the 1D mark IV have the legs to stand up against this baby. Time will tell when we get a hold of it next week.

Well take a look at this pic, it was shot on the run at the Perth Museum yesterday. On the run because my kids were scared out of their little minds when we went to this exhibition that is being held till later in the month. The dinosaurs moved and roared and were very lifelike. I was getting requests to leave then pleading then begging. I had just spent $28 to enter so I didn’t want to go but I also didn’t want the kids to be traumatized too much!! Just a little bit!!
Ok big deal you say, what if I said it was shot at 12800 iso?? Handheld no less whilst being pushed towards the exit and under extreme amounts of pressure to just take the shot daddy!! There is some noise there but noise ninja would eat it up. This is pretty much straight out of the camera too only a slight levels adjustment. The verdict, yep this is one ISO loving camera. I think I have found a new girlfriend, always wanted a mistress, hope the wife doesn’t mind!!

Hi all, thinking of the new Nikon D3s, Brendon from PRA has just sent me this special he is having and it is only for the punters who visit my blog. See below for details. This new camera is pretty hot from early indications, can’t wait to get my hands on it!! I can’t stop thinking how fantastic this baby would be in those low light situations. I am shooting stills in December on the set of a short movie being made in Perth. I hope to be using the D3s for it. More details of the movie shoot to come.

Team Digital now have the Nikon D3s in stock. We are told that the Nikon D3s not only has video, but also has a number improvement on the previous Nikon D3 which could make this camera a class leader. Benny is getting me the D3s for the weekend, this will be my first chance to shoot with a Nikon after starting with one 20 years ago. Could it mean I will stop flying the Canon flag, we will see. I must say I am pretty excited to have a crack at this camera, more so than the 7D. I think the hi iso capability is the key. Now the 1D mark IV will be exciting too but that won’t be out till December. Also the boys will be receiving the new Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VRII which promises to set a new standard in lens quality. I love my 70-200 Canon lens, this would be one to have in your kit.
